Phillip Joseph improves to 3-0 in MAC competition

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team suffered its fourth-straight defeat and second consecutive Mid-American Conference dual loss as it fell to No. 25 Ohio University, 22-13, Sunday, Jan. 19.

Eastern falls to 8-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in the MAC as Ohio improves to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Bobcats bounced back after a hard three point loss to MAC opponent, Central Michigan, Friday, Jan. 17. Ohio grabbed the first six points of the match as No. 15 Tywan Claxton secured a 5-3 decision at 149 lbs. and Spartak Chino notched a 3-2 decision over Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) at 157 lbs.

True freshman Dean Vettese (Rochester, Mich.-Rochester) nabbed his first collegiate dual victory, taking down Harrison Hightower at 165 lbs. with a 5-1 decision to bring EMU within three of the Bobcats. "Dean wrestled great and I was very pleased with him." stated Head Coach Derek DelPorto following the match.

After moving up a weight class earlier in the week, Jacob Davis (Northridge, Ohio-St. Edward) was unable to hold off No. 7 Cody Walters as the Bobcat kept Davis scoreless through three periods and clinched the 4-0 decision. Redshirt-senior Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) improved to 3-0 in MAC competition when he topped Ryan Garringer with an 8-3 decision.

Ohio extended its lead to 19-6 when it used a major decision at 197 lbs. and a pin in the heavyweight division to gain nine quick points over the Eagles. The Green and White answered back with seven points of its own when No. 15 Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) secured his 10th dual victory of the season with a 15-5 major decision at 125 lbs and Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) notched his third-straight victory with a decision at 133 lbs.

Trailing by six in the final bout, the Eagles were unable to grab the pin they needed to tie the match as Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) fell in a 5-2 decision allowing Ohio to take the 22-13 victory.

"Even though we lost the dual meet, our effort was so much better today than Friday," said DelPorto, "We only won one out of the four close matches and that coast us the dual. We must find a way to win the close ones."

The Eagles return to Ypsilanti, Friday, January, 31 as they continue MAC competition. The Green and White will take on Kent State at Bowen Field House. First bout is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
