Eagles extend MAC winning streak to 64 in first conference dual of 2013-14

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)-- Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team continued its Mid-American Conference winning streak, extending to 64 wins with a 195-105 decision over the University at Buffalo. While competing against the conference foe, the Eagles also picked up a 209-91 victory over Big Ten opponent Michigan State University. With the result of the afternoon's duals, the Eagles improve to 4-1 (1-0 MAC), while the Bulls fall to 2-2 (0-1 MAC) and the Spartans now stand at 0-4 (0-1 B1G).
The Green and White controlled the majority of the meet, recording 12 wins against Buffalo and 14 over MSU in the afternoon's 16 events. The meet started off with a victory against both visiting squads, as the 200 medley relay team of Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson), Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community), Krzysztof Gilski (Dywity, Poland-Adam Mickiewicz State Secondary) and Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross) won the event in 1:32.05.
Sophomore Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) led all Eagles in individual victories, as he came out on top over both Buffalo and MSU in three events. Henry started off with a win in the 200 free, as teammate Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) nabbed a runner-up finish overall in the event. The Garner, N.C. native then switched strokes, notching a team season-high 1:50.18 in the 200 back. The race also boasted an Eagle runner-up, as Bateman finished less than one second behind his teammate. Henry finished up with another team season-high of 1:51.52 in the 200 IM.
Three other Eagles recorded the fastest time of the season in their respective events. Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline) won the 100 and 200 breast over both visiting teams, earning the top time among the squad in each event. Moore sprinted to a season-high 45.11 in the 100 free, and Bateman bested his own time in the 100 back, touching in at 50.72.
Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic S.S.) scored a 310.10 on the 1-meter springboard and Dakoda Johnson (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove) led the way on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 323.95 to establish another pair of wins for the Green and White.
The Eagles ended the meet with the 400 free relay team of Foos, Moore, Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) and Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) clinching one final victory over both the Bulls and the Spartans.
The squad will remain at home for the next two meets, as they will host Wayne State University Friday, Jan. 24 and will then turn around to host Ohio State and MAC opponent Ball State University Saturday, Jan. 25. Both meets will begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
