Full Weekly Release

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team will play in four matches this week, including three in Valparaiso, Ind. for the 2013 Valpo Popcorn Classic this weekend, Sept. 6-7. Eastern will host its first match of the season when the Eagles square off with Oregon State University (3-0) Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center before heading to Valpo for its second tournament of the season.

EMU will play three matches this weekend when its heads to Valparaiso University (4-0). The Green and White will first square off with tournament host Valpo for a 7 p.m. tilt at the Athletics-Recreation Center Friday evening. The Eagles are scheduled for a double-header Saturday when they take on the United States Military Academy (Army) (0-3) Saturday morning at 10 a.m. before concluding their portion of the tournament with a 2 p.m. match with the University of Iowa (3-0) on Saturday afternoon.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE OPPONENTS: EMU has only played in 11 matches combined against this week's opponents. The Green and White take on Oregon State for the first time in the Eagles' history.

The Crusaders of Valpo are the most familiar foe of EMU's this week. The Eagles and Crusaders have met on the hardwood six times in the history of the programs. Eastern holds a 4-2 edge in the all-time series. EMU dropped a five set match to Valpo, Sept. 10, 2005, in the last matchup.
The Green and White take on Army for the second time ever Saturday. Army leads that series, 1-0. The Eagles dropped a three set match the last time these two institutions locked up, Aug. 29, 2009, in West Point, N.Y.

Finally, EMU will see Iowa for the fifth time ever. The Eagles and Hawkeyes have split the all-time series, 2-2. The last time these two teams squared off, the Hawkeyes walked away with a four set win, Sept. 16, 2006 in Charleston, S.C.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY: Eastern Michigan Head Volleyball Coach Kim Berrington looks forward to the Valpo Popcorn Classic this weekend a little bit more than most of the 2013 volleyball squad. Berrington's daughter, Kelsey, is a setter in her sophomore season with Valparaiso.

This will be the first time that Coach Berrington will faceoff with her daughter since Kelsey graduated from Tecumseh High School in the Spring of 2012. Last season, Kelsey appeared in each set for the Crusaders and totaled 783 assists and 259 digs as a freshman on the 2012 squad. As a team, the 2012 Valpo team went 21-12.

EASTERN BRINGS IN  PAC-12 OPPONENT: The Beavers of Oregon State University will travel from Corvallis, Ore. to Ypsilanti to take on the Eagles, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. OSU is a member of the Pacific 12 Conference, which has delivered six of the last 12 NCAA Division I National Volleyball Championship teams, and will help prepare the Eagles for its 16-match Mid-American Conference campaign this season.

Eastern has never hosted or competed against a member of the PAC-12 in the 36 years it has competed in volleyball. The Beavers are coached by Taras Liskevych, who is a former U.S. Olympic women's head coach and is in his eighth season in Corvallis. Liskevych has a career record of 326-199 and helped OSU produce its first ever All-American. The Loyola (Ill.) graduate won an Olympic Bronze Medal in 1992 when the U.S. men's and women's teams swept the volleyball bronze medals.

ROBACK NAMED TO GOLDEN GRIFFIN INVITE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Senior outside hitter Paige Roback was named to the 2013 Golden Griffin Invitational's All-Tournament team Saturday, Aug. 31, after the Eagles posted a 2-1 record in the two-day tournament.

Roback totaled the most kills of any member of the EMU squad with 47, averaging 3.62 per set. Holding a .260 (47-13-131) attack percentage, she averaged 4.08 points per set and was second on the team in digs with 52, good for four per game. It was the third time in her career that she was named to an all-tournament team.
In 2011, she was the Most Valuable Player of the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic, while also earning All-Tournament honors at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational.

WELCOME TO THE COMING OUT PARTY: Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Perinar showed why Kim Berrington brought her to EMU in the first weekend of the 2013 season. Perinar posted double-digit kills in each of the three matches during the 2013 Golden Griffin Invitational. Her best performance came in the Eagles' four-set victory over Canisius when she posted a career-best 20 kills against the host school.

ROBACK HAS A CAREER MATCH: Paige Roback set a career-high 21 kills against Hartford University, Aug. 30, in EMU's second match of the season. Not only did she post 21 kills, but she posted a .340 (21-4-50) attack percentage.

THE BATTLE AT LIBERO: After the 2012 season, it seemed as though sophomore Sierra Reed, who was the Eagles' regular libero last season, would likely be the starter at libero for the 2013 season, but fellow sophomore Corynne Smith is battling Reed for that starting position. Smith started a pair of matches last weekend, while Reed was called upon to handle the libero duties in the Eagles' win over Hartford, Aug. 30.
