YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Ball State University in the Mid-American Conference lid lifter for both teams, Sept. 27.  The Eagles (10-6, 0-1 MAC) faltered against the Cardinals (13-3, 1-0 MAC) 17-25, 17-25, 23-25 at the Convocation Center.

Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) paced the Eagles in kills with seven and a .152 hitting percentage.  Senior outside hitter Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and junior middle blocker Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) added four apiece while also picking up one service ace each. Sophomore setter Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) led the team in assists with nine.

On the defensive front, redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) led the team with six block assists, while senior outside hitter Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) helped shut down a BSU hitters on four occasions. Sophomore libero Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) scooped up 15 digs for the Eagles.

The Cardinals were led by Mindy Marx with 12 kills and a .688 hitting percentage, while Alex Fuelling added 11 kills for the Cardinals.  Catie Fredrich led all players for the match with 22 digs.

The Cardinals took an early lead in the first set before a kill by Roback would put the Eagles on the board, 1-4.  However, a powerful offensive front from BSU soon landed the visiting team with a 19-10 advantage.  A pair of BSU errors and an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) gave the Eagles a small three-point run before the Cardinals answered back with a consistent string of points, ending the first frame for the Eagles with a dropped set, 17-25.  The Eagles had the most kills as a team in the first set with eight, but eight hitting errors for a .000 hitting percentage coupled with battling BSU's 17 team kills plagued the team in its effort to take the set.

Eastern Michigan was able to battle more in the start of the second set, gaining a slight lead at 9-8 before a kill by BSU's Haley Benson kickstarted another run for the Cardinals.  Ball State's aggressive serving and a handful of unforced errors by the Eagles soon gave the Cardinals the upper hand in the match once again. In a nearly identical finish to the first set, EMU ended the set with a .000 hitting percentage to close out the frame, 17-25.  Perinar was the main offensive force for the Eagles, earning the bulk of the squad's kills for the set off of 16 swings.

The Eagles picked up their offensive effort in the third set, but the Cardinals answered back with their best defensive frame and picked up 26 of their 65 digs for the evening against the Green and White.  The set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams after the Cardinals were able to fight back from being down 3-10 and tied the game up 14-14 off of a service ace.  The last time the Eagles would have the lead for the set was at 20-19, after a kill by Perinar and an attack error from BSU.  A series of errors from the Eagles and a trio of BSU kills brought the set and match to a close, 23-25.

The Eagles look to bounce back from the evening's loss tomorrow night, Sept. 28, when they continue their conference play against the University of Toledo at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
