YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team got back to its winning ways Saturday night, Sept. 28, when it took down the University of Toledo in four sets. The Eagles (11-6, 1-1 MAC) picked up their first conference victory over the Rockets (7-8, 0-2 MAC) at the Convocation Center, 29-27, 17-25, 25-16 and 25-23.

EMU had three student-athletes in double figures for kills. Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) led the way with 13, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) added 11 and 10, respectively. Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) hit .444 with nine kills on 18 attempts. Briner also had 16 assists for the Green and White. Perinar and Roback added 10 and 12 digs to pick up double-doubles. Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) led the Eagles with 25 assists. Overall, EMU hit .223 with just 15 errors throughout the four set match.

On the defensive side of things, Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) totaled seven blocks, while Short added six block assists of her own.  Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) had a match-high 26 digs, which ties the third-most in her career.

For Toledo, Lauren Rafdal posted a match-high 17 kills, while Becca Reidy added 13 and Dakota Harkins notched 11. UT libero Ellen Hayes tied Smith with a match-high 26 digs, and Adria Pryor posted a match-best 35 assists. As a team, the Rockets hit .140 after being forced into 29 attack errors by the EMU defense.

The Green and White had to grind out the first set against the Rockets, taking the first set in extra points, 29-27. Short paced the offensive attack in the first frame, picking up four kills on eight attack attempts. Perinar added three kills, while Briner, Jones and Roback each notched a pair. As a team, the Eagles hit .216 with just three attack errors on 51 attempts. Briner and Jones were each in on the two blocks for EMU in the opening frame. Rafdal totaled seven kills in the first set, but Eastern held the Rockets to a .200 attack percentage throughout the frame.

In the second frame, Eastern struggled offensively, posting just a .062 attack percentage after picking up just six kills in the set. Reidy was the catalyst for Toledo, posting seven kills on nine attempts without an error. EMU was forced into four service errors while Toledo was flawless from behind the service line. The Green and White added three more blocks to their total in the frame but the Rockets' .205 attack percentage proved to be the difference in the 17-25 setback, as the match went into halftime dead-locked at a set apiece.

The Eagles cruised in the third frame, taking back the one set advantage following a 25-16 score. EMU was led by Perinar on the offensive side of the ball. The sophomore recorded five kills in the set, while Roback totaled four of her own. As a team, Eastern hit .293 in the frame, making just four errors in 41 attempts. The Eagles held Toledo to a .122 attack percentage, allowing only 11 kills in UT's 41 chances. Defensively, the Green and White added two more blocks to its total, including a pair of block assists for Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan).

The fourth and final set was a hard fought battle which EMU prevailed, 25-23. Briner paced the Eastern offense with four kills, while Perinar, Roback and Short notched three each. EMU held Toledo to just 10 kills in 43 attempts and a .023 attack percentage. However, on the other side of the net, the Eagles hit .286 making just four attack errors. EMU added three more blocks in the last set of the match, with Jones picking up a solo block and a pair of block assists.

The Eagles are off until next weekend, Oct. 4-5, when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. to take on Northern Illinois University at 7 p.m. Friday evening. EMU will then head to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a match with the Broncos of Western Michigan University Saturday at 7 p.m.
