Mebuke and Supejova will play for the Gold Flight Doubles Championship

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team completed day two at the 2013 Gopher Invitational held by the University of Minnesota, Sept. 21. The Eagles had a strong showing, including one of its doubles squads advancing to the championship match of the Gold Flight.

In singles play, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) dropped Julia Courter of Minnesota in a tiebreaker (1-6, 6-4, 1-0), while Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) fell in her semifinal matchup with Ksenia Pronira of Iowa State (3-6, 7-6, 0-1). Davitaia will take on Erica Medin of the University of Northern Iowa for third place in the "M" Flight on Sunday. Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) defeated  Katie Edwards from Gonzaga University in a tiebreaker (4-6, 7-6, 1-0) and will take on Morven McCulloch of the University of Iowa Sunday morning. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) will play for third in the Maroon Flight after dropping a semifinal match with Isabell Klingert from Gonzaga (6-7, 6-4, 0-1).

On the doubles end, the team of Mebuke and Supejova were dominant, winning a pair of matches Saturday morning. The duo first took on Jordan Eggleston and Maddie Johnson. Mebuke and Supejova dispatched the Drake Unviersity team, 8-6, before heading into the semfinal round. They then met South Dakota State University's Ffion Davies and Jenny Blackburne and defeated them in dominant fashion, 8-2. They will play in the finals Sunday at 9 a.m. against Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch from Iowa for the Gold Flight Championship.  Davitaia and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) will play for fifth in the Gold Flight after taking down Lauren Chypyha and Sydney Rider from the University of Wisconsin, 9-8. In the Maroon Flight, Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) took a pair of matches and moved onto the consolation finals.

We played some solid doubles, which was good to see today," remarked Head Women's Tennis Coach Ryan Ray. "We put ourself in a position to win in most of our singles matches.  The supertiebreaks for the third set are often a tossup, so it was difficult to lose a couple semis by the tiebreaks.  We will take a shot at the doubles title tomorrow, and finish strong in all other matches."

The Eagles will finish out the season opening tournament Sunday, Sept. 22. Matches begin at 9 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
