The top EMU doubles squad took down the No. 28 doubles squad in the nation
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's tennis duo, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) took the Gold Flight Doubles championship as the Eagles completed its first weekend of the 2013-14 season Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
EMU only dropped one match in the final day of the tournament. Mebuke and Supejova were the top in the tournament knocking off No. 28-ranked Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch from the University of Iowa (9-7) to win the Gold Flight Championship.
In singles action, Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) defeated Erica Medin (6-4, 6-1) from the University of Northern Iowa for a third place finish in the "M" Flight Singles. In the Maroon Flight, Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) topped Kelsey Frechette (6-3, 7-5) from Minnesota. Mebuke took fifth place in the "U" Flight after taking down Samantha Polayes (7-5, 6-4).
"We finished very strong today, which is great to see," Head Coach Ryan Ray stated. "Klara and Nino picked up a great win over the No. 28 team in the country to win the title, and we were very dominant in singles, not losing a set. The third day of these tournaments is more mental then physical, and we did a great job of competing."
The Eagles are off until Friday, Sept. 27, when the Eagles travel to the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
