Eastern Opens 2013-14 at the Gopher Invitational

The Eagles travel to Minneapolis, Minn. for their first matches of 2013-14

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team will open up its fall slate this weekend, Sept. 20-22, when takes part in the 2013 Gopher Invitational at the University of Minnesota. The invite will take place at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Golden Gophers will play host to 11 schools, including the Eagles. Other teams participating in the fall invitational will include: Minnesota, South Dakota University, the University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, the University of Wisconsin, University of North Dakota, Iowa State University, South Dakota State University, Gonzaga University and the University of Iowa.
EMU had a strong showing at the 2012 Gopher Invitational last season. Individually, senior Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) took home the first-place finish in the Gold Division Singles as she defeated teammate Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) who ultimately took second place in the top division. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstron Schule) finished fourth in the Gopher Division Singles taking Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Brittany Skemp to a three set tiebreak, eventually falling, 7-6. Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and Supejova took second in the doubles match in the gold division.
Davitia and Supejova have the chance to meet each other in the finals again this season as they are on opposite sides of the draw in the "M" Flight Singles which starts Friday morning, at 10 a.m. Toncheva will appear in the Gold Flight along with Ankita Bhatia (Guragon, India-Dehli Public Schools). Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School), Friedrichs and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) will each take part in the Maroon Flight beginning Friday, at 12 p.m. Nino Mebuke (Tsibilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) is the final Eagle to compete and she is part of the "U" Flight, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday morning. In doubles action, the team of Davitaia/Ribero, along with Mebuke/Supejova, will compete in the Gold Flight, while Bhatia/Toncheva will compete in the Maroon Flight. All doubles matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
