Eagles Complete Day One of the Gopher Invitational

EMU had multiple student-athletes continue in the winners' bracket
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team completed day one at the 2013 Gopher Invitational held by the University of Minnesota, Sept. 20-22.
In doubles action, the Green and White had three duos take the court. The team of Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) took ther match with relative ease in the NCAA Division I doubles pro set format, 8-5, defeating the University of Northern Iowa's Krissy Lankelma and Elvira Lopez. Additionaly, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) moved on to the winners' bracket by topping UNI's Erica Medin and Astrid Santos, 8-6. Both of these duos advanced to the winners' bracket of the Gold Flight.
In the Maroon Flight, the doubles team of Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) fell to the Panthers' doubles team of Kylie Haviland and Jieke Stroobant, 5-8, while Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) and Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) dropped a 2-8 decision to Drake University's Mariel Ante and Nell Boyd.
In singles play, Davitaia knocked off the University of North Dakota's Faith Lee (6-3, 6-3) in the "M" Flight, while Mebuke cruised to a win over Meghan Cassens of Iowa State University (6-0, 6-0) in the "U" Flight. In the Gold Flight Toncheva took a three set decision over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Dana Shannon (7-6, 4-6, 1-0). Friedrichs took her match in the Maroon Flight topping Yamini Reddy (6-1, 6-1) from the University of South Dakota, while Ribero notched her first singles victory of her career with a win over Melanie Yates in a three set tiebreaker (2-6, 7-6, 1-0).
Singles play made it through two rounds Friday. Supejova dropped her first match but earned a bye to move on in the loser's bracket in the "M" Flight. Also in that flight, Davitaia continued to move on with a win over Sydney Rider (6-4, 6-4) from the University of Wisconsin. Mebuke fell in her second match to Jessika Mozia (0-6, 2-6) from Minnesota in the "U" Flight, while Toncheva fell in the second round of the Gold Flight to Ante (5-7, 1-6). After dropping the first match of her Gold Flight, Bhatia took the second (6-2, 5-7, 1-0) against Jenny Blackburne of South Dakota State University to move on. Friedrichs won another match, topping Chelsea Bailey of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (6-4, 6-3). Zsofia Biro went 1-1 on the day, while Ribero dropped her second match.
The Eagles continue action at the 2013 Gopher Invitational Saturday, Sept. 21. Doubles matches will start the day at 9 a.m.
