YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team ran in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener Friday, Sept. 13 at Bowling Green State University.  The field of competitors had a staggering 86 runners for the evening meet, and junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia / School #42) was able to secure a second place finish, making her the lone Eagle in the top-10 finishers.

Voronko came in with a time of 17:08.78 behind Youngstown State's Samantha Hamilton.  The remaining top-10 competitors was dominated by Mid-American Conference favorites Miami University and the University of Toledo, with Toledo's runners grabbing five of the remaining eight spots and Miami cleaning up the rest with three finishers.

The 5000 meter race showed vast improvement from the Eagles' previous race at the EMU Triangular.  Seven of the nine runners cut at least 40 seconds off of their 5k time from two weeks ago with five making gains of over one minute.

The Green and White were able to place two more runners in the top-20 with senior Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Lutheran North) and freshman Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont).  Pfund finished with a time of 17:57.29 for a 15th place finish and Aldrich came in at a 17:59.03 mark, good for 17th place.

The meet was not scored.

Regarding the team's performance, Head Coach Sue Parks said, "It was great to challenge ourselves by competing against the top-two ranked teams in the MAC.  I thought that our top three ran well but unfortunately, we had too big of a gap between our third and fourth runners and that hurt us.  But we know that we are not at full strength just yet and as long as we continue to improve, I believe that we can close the gap to the top teams as the season goes on."

Parks will take the squad to Three Rivers, Mich. next week for the George Dales Invitational, Friday, Sept. 20.
