YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team (1-3-1) returns home after life on the road for four straight matches. The Eagles will face Michigan State University Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15. The match at Scicluna Field is set to begin at 1 p.m.
For the fourth time in five contests, Eastern (1-3-1) will face an opponent from the Big Ten Conference. The Eagles are coming off a weekend trip to Indiana in which the Green and White suffered a setback but finished the trip with a draw. EMU fell in a low-scoring affair to Indiana, 1-0, Sept. 6, before recording its first tie of the season, a 1-1 draw against Butler, Sept. 8.
Offensively, EMU is led by senior Cara Cutaia and junior Angela Vultaggio with seven and four points, respectively. Cutaia's three goals are a team best while Vultaggio, Bianca Rossi and Martha Stevens have all found the net once this season. When it comes to sharing the ball, five different Eagles have recorded assists, led by Vultaggio's two. Cutaia, Stephanie Clarke, Molli Krick and Marisa Kozikowski have all set up a teammate for a goal once this season.
Sophomore Megan McCabe has been between the posts for the Green and White throughout the 2013 campaign. Playing all 488 minutes of the season so far, McCabe holds a 1.48 goals-against average. After making 12 stops in the past two games, her 29 saves on the season lead the conference.
Scouting the Spartans: The Spartans (4-0-2) will try to keep their unbeaten streak alive, facing two Mid-American Conference opponents this weekend. Before making the trip southeast to Ypsilanti, Michigan State hosts Bowling Green Friday, Sept. 13.
MSU is led in scoring by Allyson Krause with five points, while teammate Jessica White has recorded four points through the early portion of the schedule. Both Krause and White have found the net more than any of their teammates, tallying two goals apiece.
Redshirt junior Courtney Clem is the primary goalkeeper for the Spartans, stopping 23 shots in over 516 minutes of action. Giving up five goals in six games, Clem holds a 0.87 goals-against average.
Last Time We Met: EMU and MSU went toe-to-toe last year in East Lansing, Mich., with the host Spartans shutting out the Eagles, 2-0, Sept. 9, 2012. The game remained scoreless until the 67th minute, when Olivia Stander struck for the Spartans. Three minutes later, Chelsea Peterson scored the second and final goal for Michigan State. EMU fired six shots on goal, but Courtney Clem stopped all of them to earn the shutout.
All-Time vs. MSU: The Eagles and Spartans have met on the pitch every year since 2001, with each match occurring during the regular season aside from the exhibition meetings in 2005 and 2011. Michigan State leads the all-time series, 10-1-3.
Big Ten Enters MAC Country: EMU will host an opponent from the Big Ten at Scicluna Field for the first time since 2009. Coincidentally, the last school to make the trip to Ypsilanti was none other than Michigan State. On that Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2009 ,EMU faced a daunting opponent in unbeaten Michigan State and lived up to the task. The Eagles scored an early goal and weathered an onslaught of offensive pressure by the Spartans to walk away with a 1-1 draw at Scicluna Field. With another unbeaten MSU team coming to town this Sunday, Sept. 15, will we see a similar outcome or a different one?
Weekend Recap From Indiana: Eastern finished a two-match swing in Indiana with a loss and a draw. On Friday, Sept. 6, the Green and White faced the defensively-sound Hoosiers, where an IU goal in the 50th minute proved to be the difference as the match's only score. Two days later, the Eagles once again found themselves trailing Butler, 1-0. Looking to not repeat the same outcome as Friday, Cutaia found the net in the 65th minute following a set up by Marisa Kozikowski and Molli Krick, knotting up the game that eventually ended in a 1-1 draw. Allowing one goal in each contest, EMU goalkeeper Megan McCabe made a dozen saves between the two games.
Cutaia Climbing the MAC Charts: An Academic All-Mid-American Conference and All-MAC Second Team honoree a season ago, senior midfielder Cara Cutaia ranks in a tie for second in the conference in goals (3) as well as in the top-five for several other statistical categories. The Burlington, Ontario native sits fourth in the MAC in both shots (17) and points (7).
The EMU senior scored the crucial game-tying goal in the Eagles' last match at Butler, Sept. 8, when the two teams ended in a 1-1 tie. Cutaia also gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead on the road against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, Aug. 25. However, OSU would score in the second half as well as overtime to win the tightly-contested match, 2-1. Against the Titans, Aug. 23, Cutaia connected with Angela Vultaggio for the Green and White's first goal of the season. In the second half, she provided the game-tying goal before another EMU goal gave the Eagles the victory.
Staying at Scicluna Next Weekend: The Eagles will stay in Ypsilanti next weekend to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a pair of matches. First, EMU will face the Hatters of Stetson University Friday evening, Sept. 20, for a 5 p.m. kick. Finishing off the weekend as well as the non-conference slate, the Indiana State Sycamores will face Eastern Sunday, Sept. 22, at Scicluna Field, with the match set to begin at 1 p.m.
