The Eagles' team GPA of 3.48 ranked 19th nationally

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Once again, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team proved to be successful in the classroom as 12 Eagles were tabbed Academic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women, Aug. 28. Five graduated seniors and seven current Eagles earned the distinction. Out of all the collegiate gymnastics teams, EMU ranked 19th in the nation with a team grade point average of 3.48.

Head Coach Steve Wilce's squad has been known to not only be extraordinary on the mat, but in the classroom as well. Last season, the Eagles had the 10th best GPA in the country, posting a 3.52. Additionally, Wilce's Eagles have notched double-digits in the number of Academic All-Americans in each of the past twelve seasons. Also since that time, Eastern Michigan gymnastics has produced more Academic All-Americans than any other school in the country, an impressive feat of both academics and athletics.

2013 seniors Brittany Cassar, Camille Cicchini, Amanda Fuller, Kristina Kurkmilis and Erica Mahan all made the list. Cassar earned her degree in marketing while holding a 3.68 GPA. Cicchini posted the best GPA on the team with a 3.96 as a nursing major, tying for the 80th best grade point average for a gymnast throughout the entire country. Fuller also cracked the top-100, receiving her degree in elementary education with a 3.94 GPA. As two exercise science majors, Kurkmilis and Mahan boasted GPAs of 3.83 and 3.71, respectively.

Shawna Ciaramella, one-of-six seniors expected to be on the 2014 roster, earned a 3.67 GPA as an elementary education major.

Four Eagles found themselves on the list after two years at EMU. Alexandra Lekson and Paulina Miller are not only teammates, but classmates in the biology program as well. Lekson holds an impressive 3.80 GPA, while Miller's GPA is 3.72. A geography/geotourism major, Nikki Paterson has a stellar GPA of 3.82, and speech language/health care major Anna Willette currently possesses a 3.56 GPA.

Two gymnasts earned All-American accolades in their debut season with the Green and White. Kimberly Ebeyer tallied a 3.74 in her first year as an exercise science major. Also, NCAA regional qualifier Khadijah Hudson secured a 3.60 GPA in her first year at EMU.

The NACGC/W seeks to actively manage and develop the sport of women's gymnastics at the collegiate level and works with the NCAA and USA Gymnastics in order to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes.
