Eagle standout broke Canadian junior and Pan Am junior records

MEDELLÍN, Columbia. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario / Mother Teresa)  has another title to add to her already impressive list of accolades.  The sophomore Eagle claimed a first-place finish in the pole vault at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships on Sunday, Aug. 25.

The 19-year old Newman, competing for the Canadian Junior National Team, set both a Canadian junior and Pan American junior record with her vault of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5.2 inches).  Her mark demolished the previous Canadian junior record of 4.31 meters (14 feet, 1.75 inches), also held by Newman, and the Pan American record of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.3 inches), set by American vaulter Natalie Willer in 2009.

Newman will look to continue her streak of dominance  in the 2013-2014 track & field season, where she will defend her Mid-American Conference indoor and outdoor pole vault championship titles.
