YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team kicked off its 2013 season falling 5-4 against Illinois State University in an exhibition match Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 14, at Scicluna Field. The high-scoring affair was the lone exhibition match for the Eagles before beginning the regular season, Friday, Aug. 23, at home against the University of Detroit Mercy.
Angela Vultaggio (Chesterfield, Mich.- L'Anse Creuse North) paced the Eagles with a hat trick, scoring goals in the 23rd, 41st and 53rd minutes. Freshman Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) found the scoring column for the fourth EMU goal of the contest.
Redbird Anna Stinson matched Vultaggio's hat trick with one of her own, and teammate Hannah Leinert scored a pair of goals as well. Illinois St. outshot EMU 21-16, including 12-8 in shots on goal.
Starting goalies for both teams garnered equal amounts of goals allowed to saves. In the victory, ISU's Aaryn Newsom grabbed four saves while giving up four goals. In the loss, Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) tallied five saves to her five goals allowed.
The visiting Redbirds wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 1:33 into the contest, McCabe gambled going after a ball controlled by ISU's Rachel Tejada. Tejada was able to get rid of the ball past the outstretched arms of McCabe, sending it over to Leinert who put the ball into the open net, giving the Redbirds an early 1-0 lead.
EMU knotted the game up at 1-1 with 22:35 remaining in the first half as Vultaggio stole the ball from an ISU defender. The junior forward broke away from the pack, and sent in a rocket past Newsom to tie the game.
Vultaggio grabbed the lead for the Green and White 18 minutes later with her second goal of the game, a smooth header courtesy of a crisp cross from Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas). At the 42:58 mark of the first half, the Eagles held a 2-1 lead that they would take into halftime.
The Eagles held the one-goal advantage despite Illinois St. putting more shots on goal. The Redbirds had five shots on goal while EMU sent three on goal, making two of them.
There was a scoring barrage in the second half with six goals combined between the two teams. Back-to-back goals by Stinson and Leinert gave the Redbirds a 3-2 advantage with 37:13 to play in the game. However, the Eagles would counter, tying the game at three apiece just 56 seconds later. Vultaggio would cap off her hat trick after receiving a nice pass from Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton).
The match did not remain tied for long as Stinson put her second ball into the net, giving ISU the lead back at 4-3 at the 59:41 mark. Exactly five minutes later, Clark notched her second assist of the contest, finding Rollins on a corner kick to tie the game.
With 22:23 left in the contest, Illinois St. would take the lead of good. Stinson secured her hat trick with a spectacular game-winning goal, launching the ball from outside of the top of the box and into the upper left corner of the net.
EMU will open up its 2013 regular season at home against the Titans of Detroit. The match is set to kick off from Scicluna Field at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23.
