EMU recruit Natalie Gervais will travel with Team Canada to Kazan, Russia, July 6-17
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will have one new gymnast showing off her talents at the World University Games in Kazan Russia, July 6-17. Incoming freshman Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba-University of Winnipeg) will take the mat as a member of Team Canada in artistic gymnastics.
The Summer World University Games brings together athletes from around the world to compete in multiple sports, similar to the Olympic Games. Ironically, the World University Games has the second-most athletes and countries participating in its games, behind the Olympics. Called around the world as the Summer Universiade, the World University Games take place every two years.
Gervais is one-of-five gymnasts on the artistic team that includes Olympian Ellie Black, who took eighth on the vault at the 2012 London Games. The new Eagle will be a vital part to a special team as the 2013 team will become the first Canadian artistic gymnastics team to compete at the Universiade since 1999. The gymnasts will begin the team competition, July 7, before competing individually, July 8-10.
Gervais will attend EMU beginning this fall and will compete for the Green and White in the 2014 season after signing her National Letter of Intent two months ago. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native continues her 2013 season at the World University Games after winning titles in the all-around, uneven bars and balance beam at the Edmond Financial Women's Manitoba Championships, April 13.
