GREENSBORO, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team saw three Eagles compete on the first day of the NCAA East Regional, May 23, in Greensboro, N.C. Max Babits (Fowlerville, Mich.-Fowlerville), Darrell Butler (Miami, Fla.-Miami Carroll City) and Grzegorz Kalinowski (Lysomice, Poland) represented EMU, but did not qualify for further competition.
Babits passed up marks in the pole vault until reaching 5.15-meters (16-feet 10.75-inches). However, the Second Team All-MAC performer was unable to clear the height in three attempts.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Butler placed 33rd in the preliminary round, nine spots short of qualifying for the quarterfinals. He crossed the finish line in 52.54. However, Butler's regional is not finished; the sophomore will attempt to qualify for nationals in the 110-meter hurdles tomorrow, May 24.
Kalinowski nearly advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1,500-meter run, but the junior distance runner took 25th place with a 3:45.59. The top-24 moved on to the quarters, and Ross Clarke of Butler secured the final spot with a time of 3:44.73.
Butler and fellow Eagle Daryl Smith (Windsor, Ontario-Vincent Massey S.S.) will be in action on day two of the regional meet, May 24, on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. Smith, the MAC Outdoor Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, will run the race under the lights of Aggie Stadium at 9:30 p.m.
