NIU clinches as berth in the upcoming MAC Tournament with the victory

DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- A pair of quality starts from both starting pitchers sent the first game of the three-game Mid-American Conference series between the Eastern Michigan University baseball team and Northern Illinois University to the wire. The West Division leading Huskies picked up the game one win 2-1 after the Eagles left runners on base in each of the final four innings.

Both starting pitchers went seven-plus innings in the contest and were sharp at times, but both allowed seven hits in the contest. NIU's Eli Anderson (9-3) picked up the win with help from his bullpen, tossing 8.0 innings while allowing a run and striking out seven. Anthony Andres (3) induced a ground out of the final batter of the game for his third save of the season. EMU's Brian Hill (6-2) was saddled with his first loss since March 23 after allowing two runs on eight hits. Hill notched a season-high with eight strikeouts and allowed two walks.

Eastern Michigan (22-26, 9-13 MAC) scored its only run in the third inning as Nick Rotola come around to score on a John Rubino single through the left sides on a 3-1 pitch.

Northern Illinois (21-26, 15-7 MAC) answered in the fifth with a pair of runs after two outs were already recorded. Tommy Hook and Alex Klonowski each singled to put runners of the corners. Then Jeff Zimmerman doubled to center field to plate the pair and make it 2-1.

EMU threaten with runners on base in each of the final three innings, but were unable to advance a runner  past second.

With the victory, NIU clinched as berth in the upcoming MAC Tournament, May 22-25. Kent State and Buffalo also punched their tickets to Avon, Ohio. Currently, the Eagles finds themselves on the outside of the MAC Tournament picture in the 10th spot, as they find themselves behind Akron and Central Michigan. If the season ended tonight, Buffalo would be the number one seed followed by KSU (2), NIU (3), Ball State (4), Miami (5), Bowling Green (6), Toledo (7) and Akron (8).

The three-game series continues tomorrow, May 11, at 1 p.m. CT and concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CT contest.
