SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Playing its second non-conference game on the road in as many days, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team (21-21) broke a three-game losing streak, defeating the No. 26th ranked University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (27-17), 12-6, at Frank Eck Stadium, May 1.
Head Coach Jay Alexander's ballclub picked up its first win over a ranked opponent for the first time since Feb. 18, 2011, when the Eagles beat the No. 4 ranked Clemson Tigers, 7-6. The victory over the Irish marked the fourth win over a ranked team in the past six years. The Green and White also knocked off No. 25 Kansas, 3-1, in the Metrodome, Feb. 22, 2010. EMU also defeated No. 19 Tennessee, Feb. 10, 2007, by a final 6-3 tally.
Lee Longo and John Rubino had the hottest bats in a lineup that had 12 hits with eight of its nine hitters tally at least one hit. Longo belted a three-run shot in the third inning and tallied another base-knock for a four RBI game, tying a season-high for EMU's designated hitter. Rubino tallied a team-high three hits at the plate to go along with two runs and a run batted in. Struggling in the field with three errors in the game, Marquise Gill made up for it at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, leading to three runs scored.
Ben Dartnell (1-0) got the victory in his longest outing of the season, pitching three innings of no-hit baseball while striking out three Fighting Irish. Notre Dame's Matt Ternowchek (4-4) took the loss after the Eagles pegged him for seven runs in just over three innings.
The hometown Irish struck first as leadoff batter Frank DeSico reached on an error by the EMU second baseman Gill. DeSico made the Eagles pay for the miscue, stealing second base to get in scoring position. Two-straight groundouts back to Gill advanced DeSico 90 feet each time. The latter ground ball allowed him to cross home plate, giving the Irish a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Notre Dame added another run in the second. After a triple by Ryan Bull to start the inning, Charlie Markson did hit job to get the run in, hitting a grounder to short to score Bull and increase the Irish advantage to two through two innings.
The Eagles answered with a big four-run inning in the top of the third. Gill dropped a bunt in for single the first hit of the game for EMU. Rubino was hit by a pitch two batters later, putting two Eagles on with two out. Sam Ott came through in the clutch, continuing to swing the bat effectively with a single up the middle to score Gill. Cleanup hitter Longo then sent a towering blast over the left field fence for a third-run homer, his fourth of the year. EMU turned a two-run deficit into a two-run advantage, 4-2.
EMU's lead did not last long as Notre Dame continued to put runs up on the scoreboard. With Ryan Lavoie coming in to relieve starter Joe Battistelli, the Irish knocked him around for four hits and three runs, taking a 5-4 lead just three innings into the ballgame.
The run parade continued as the first three Eagles reached base in the fourth to tie the game up at five. Jamie Simpson led the inning off with a double, Mitchell McGeein walked, and Austin Wilson singled home his third RBI of the 2013 campaign, forcing Irish starter Matt Ternowchek out of the contest with no one out in the top of the fourth. UND reliever Connor Hale struggled coming into the game, walking the first two batters that allowed one run to score, putting Eastern on top. With the bases load and nobody out, Rubino grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that plated a run to increase the margin to two, 7-5.
Eastern finally held Notre Dame scoreless in back-to-back innings after the Irish scored in the first three of the contest. The Green and White increased its lead in the top of the sixth with Longo singling in his fourth RBI of the game. Gill and Rubino singled before Longo brought in Gill for an 8-5 advantage.
Another insurance run for the Eagles came in the top of the eighth inning. Rubino continued his strong game with a triple to lead off the inning, and an Ott sacrifice fly allowed Rubino to score, making it 9-5 in favor of the Green and White.
The floodgates opened up in the ninth inning as EMU added three more runs for a, 12-5, seven-run cushion. After a Simpson three-bagger, the Eagles loaded the bases but grounded into a double-play. It looked as if the runners would be stranded, but back-to-back lined shots up the middle by Daniel Russell and Rubino brought in two more, before another run crossed home via a throwing error by UND.
The Irish broke a five-inning scoreless streak with a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it not enough as the Eagles soared to a 12-6 road victory.
With the five-game road trip coming to an end, Eastern returns to Oestrike Stadium to host Ball State University in a three-game series, May 3-5. Friday's series opener begins at 6 p.m. and can be heard live on Eagle All-Access.
