Women’s track and field looks to add to16 automatic qualifying marks for MAC Championships
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will compete in the 28th annual Toledo Invitational, May 2-3, at the Fetterman Outdoor Track and Field Facility. The javelin throw kicks off the meet Thursday, May 2. Running and field events will both begin the last day of action, May 3, at 11 a.m. The meet will serve as the final competition before the all-important Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 9-11, in Akron Ohio.
“We are excited about the improvement that we made at Drake and Hillsdale, espcially on the distance side,” noted EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. “We will run the events that we need to at Toledo this weekend, and we will do what is best for each individual in their preparation for the MAC Championships.”
The Green and White enter Toledo off of a pair of weekend meets, April 25-27, in the Hillsdale-Gina Relays and the Drake Relays. Victoria Voronko had arguably the most impressive meet of the year, breaking her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well as the 5,000-meter run at Drake. On Thursday, April 25, Voronko broke her second EMU record of the 2012-13 campaign, finishing the 5,000-meter run in 16:22.05, three seconds better than the old record held by Carrie Gould, set back in 1999. The sensational sophomore season continued for Voronko on the final day of the Drake Relays, April 27. She grabbed the bronze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 10:15.74 to break her own EMU record. The Stavropol, Russia native held the previous top mark of 10:23.23 which she ran just two weeks ago at the Sea Ray Relays, April 12.
In Hillsdale, Mich., senior Morgan Churchwell already held the top time in the Mid-American Conference for the 1,500-meter run, but she improved that mark with a personal-best 4:30.55 to take ninth. Fellow senior Rachel Quaintance moved up the EMU charts in the 5,000-meter run, one night after Voronko broke the school record in the event. Quaintaince finished the race in 16:58.83, the fifth best in EMU laurels, for 14th place. Adrienne Waisner also recorded the seventh-best hammer throw in EMU history, tossing a personal-best 151-feet 09.00-inches (46.26 meters).
Eastern will rest some of its athletes this week in preparation for the MAC Championships the following week. Other Eagles will compete in hopes of keeping fresh for the conference championship as well as turning in marks that will help them qualify for the meet. Currently, Eastern has automatically qualified with 16 marks, including two each from Aaliyah McKinney, Asia Rawls and Voronko.
