Sam Ott increases streak to 17 straight games reaching base
Sam Ott continued his hot hitting, reaching base for the 17th straight game and going 2-for-5 with two runs batted in. Leadoff hitter Daniel Russell also tallied two hits, two runs and a RBI for the Green and White. Shortstop John Rubino knocked in two Eagles as well in the loss, as EMU drops to 20-21 overall, but remains at 9-9 in MAC play on the 2013 campaign. Taylor Dimmerling (2-1) took his first loss of the season, giving up three runs on three walks and six hits.
The defending MAC Champion Golden Flashes (24-20; 12-6 MAC) claimed the neutral site victory behind two innings of relief by John Birkbeck (3-0). Third baseman Zarley Zalewski led KSU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Teammate Alex Miklos also tallied two hits and two runs for Kent State
The Golden Flashes struck first, tallying three runs in the top of the second for the early, 3-0, lead. With the bases loaded, KSU third baseman Zarley Zalewski hit a liner to right, scoring two Golden Flashes. Ott fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw to third base sailed into the bleachers, allowing another run to score and Zalewski to advance to third.
The Green and White fought back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. It looked as if Kent State starter Nick Jensen-Clagg would keep his perfect game going through three innings, but first baseman George Roberts dropped a throw from third, allowing Nick Rotola to reach base and keep the inning alive. The Eagles made Roberts pay for the miscue as Russell tripled in the right center field gap to score Rotola. Rubino singled in Russell before coming around to score on an Ott double down the right field line to knot the game up, 3-3.
Kent State responded in its next at-bat, this time taking advantage of an Eagles' error. Having retired the first two batters of the innings, EMU starting pitcher Michael Marsinek seemed to have control of the inning, fielding a check-swing grounder back to the mound. However, Marsinek's throw sailed wide, forcing first baseman Adam Sonabend off of the base. The Golden Flashes took advantage. A base hit on the next at-bat ended Marsinek's day, and Dimmerling walked the next two Golden Flashes, bringing in one run to give KSU a 4-3 advantage.
Eastern countered in the bottom of the fifth as Russell doubled for his second hit of the game. A Rubino groundball to first advanced Russell to third with two outs before Ott tallied his second hit and RBI of the game with an opposite-field poke to right, tying the game, 4-4, through five innings of play.
Back-to-back doubles in the top of the seventh gave KSU a one-run lead. The next batter, Justin Wagler, launched one to deep right center field in his first at-bat after coming off of the bench to play third base. After his RBI triple, Wagler came around to score on a single to make it 7-4 in favor of the Golden Flashes.
In the bottom half of the inning, Roberts dropped another ball at first, allowing Mitch McGeein to reach base. Rotola singled next, and Russell advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Rubino's soft grounder to second base was enough to bring in McGeein, cutting the difference to two, 7-5. However, the Eagles would be unable to complete the comeback, stranding three runners over the final three innings.
The Eagles waste no time in returning to the diamond, traveling to South Bend, Ind. tomorrow, May 1, face the University of Notre Dame. First pitch from Frank Eck Stadium is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. The game can be heard for free on Eagle All-Access as Chad Bush and Greg Steiner will have the call.
