Women's Golf Equals School-Best Finish with a Second Place Showing

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – For the sixth time in program history, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team equaled the school's best finish with a runner-up showing at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday, April 28, at the par 72, 6,075 yard Longaberger Golf Club. The Eagles carded a three-day total of 937 (318-303-316) to finish tied with the University of Toledo for second place, as Kent State rolled to its 15th consecutive championship with a 54-hole total of 909 (303-298-308).
EMU's second-place finish equaled the mark set by the 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009 and the 2011 squads. In 2003, the Green and White recorded a 925 at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio. The 2007 team posted a 1,252 at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, while the 2008 Eagles finished as the runner-up with 1,228 at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. The 2009 squad totaled a 1,256 while the 2011 team notched a 928 in Nashport, Ohio.
The Eagles' six runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship are the the most of any team in the league. Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Ball State (2010, 2012), Western Michigan (2004) and Toledo (2006) are the only other teams to record a second place finish in the history of the tournament.
Senior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) and junior Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) finished in a tied for eighth place with a 232. Johnson shot a final round 76 to finish with a 232 (79-77-76) while Know fired a 77 on Sunday for a 232 (79-76-77). After leading the Eagles through the first two rounds, junior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) slipped to 10th place after posting a 79 for a 54-hole total of 233 (78-76-79).
For their efforts, Johnson was named first team All-MAC for the second consecutive season, while Kwon picked up second team All-MAC accolades.
Kent State's Jennifer Ha claim medalist honors with a six-over par total of 222 (76-72-74). Ha was followed by Toledo's Sathika Ruenreong (77-75-73=225).
Kent State shot 601 through the first 36 holes and followed that up by turning in a 20-over par 308 performance in the final round. Ball State finished fourth with a 941, as Western Michigan (946), Bowling Green (957), Akron (965), Northern Illinois (983) and Ohio (1,007) rounded out the team scores.
For the tournament, all five Eagles ranked in the top 30. Redshirt freshman Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) and redshirt sophomore Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) tied for 29th with a 245.
Head Coach Sandy Wagner and the rest of the Eagles will now await word from the NCAA on a possible at large berth into the upcoming NCAA Regional Championships, May 9-11.
