DES MOINES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University distance runner Victoria Voronko ended arguably the most impressive meet of the year, breaking her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the EMU women's track and field team wrapped up weekend action at the Drake Relays, April 27.
The sensational sophomore season continues for Voronko as she prepares for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Akron, Ohio, May 9-11. Voronko grabbed the bronze in the race, crossing the finish line in 10:15.74 to break her own EMU record. The Stavropol, Russia native held the previous top mark of 10:23.23 which she ran just two weeks ago at the Sea Ray Relays, April 12. On Thursday, April 25, Voronko began her record-breaking weekend at the Drake Relays. The sophomore distance runner broke her second EMU record of the 2012-13 campaign, finishing the 5,000-meter run in 16:22.05, three seconds better than the old record held by Carrie Gould, set back in 1999.
Current EMU hammer throw record holder Lydia Gomez-Diaz placed twelth in her top event with a toss of 181-feet 05.00-inches (55.29 meters). Meanwhile, freshman Makeda DeBardelaben leaped 39-feet 01.25-inches (11.92 meters) in the triple jump to finish in 18th place.
The Eagles return to the track one final time before the MAC Outdoor Championships, traveling south down US-23 to compete in the Toledo Invitational, May 2-3.
