EMU and MSU will play home-and-home series this season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team's originally scheduled game Tuesday, April 2, against Michigan State University has been moved to Wednesday, April 3, at 5 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (12-14; 2-4 MAC) take a breather from Mid-American Conference action to play the first-of-five contests against Big Ten Conference opponents this season.
Game audio will be available free of charge via Eagle All-Access (EMUEagles.com/showcase). Veteran play-by-play voice Chad Bush will have the call along with analyst Greg Steiner beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
EMU HOSTS “KNOCK AUTISM OUT OF THE PARK”: Eastern Michigan University along with Alpha Xi Delta are proud to present “Knock Autism Out of The Park” Wednesday at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles and Spartans hope to raise awareness about this disease that is estimated to affect 1-in-88 children and 1-in-54 boys.
MSU SCOUTING REPORT: Michigan State has had a strong start to the 2013 season, compiling a 15-8 record with a 2-1 ledger in Big Ten play. The Spartans opened their conference season, March 29-31, with a 2-1 series victory over Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. MSU has won nine of its last 10 contests and will take on Central Michigan University in East Lansing before making the trek down to Ypsilanti.
The Spartans are coached by Jake Boss, Jr., who was also the head man at Eastern Michigan for the team's fourth MAC Tournament Championship in 2008. That season, Boss led the Eagles to a 25-34 record and a 15-8 mark in MAC games.
ALL TIME AGAINST THE SPARTANS: The Eagles and Spartans will be meeting for the 128th time Wednesday. MSU holds a 70-55-2 advantage in the series. The two clubs split a home-and-home series last season with each time winning on the road. MSU won the first meeting in 2012, April 4, at Oestrike Stadium, 6-1. EMU avenged the loss with a 13-5 win in East Lansing, April 11. In that game, the Eagles put up a 12-run third inning and cruised to the victory.
EMU and MSU will square off once more this season as well, May 8, in East Lansing.
NOT SO B1G: The Eagles went 3-2 against Big Ten opponents last year which included a home-and-home sweep over Michigan. EMU also split games with Michigan State. Since Jay Alexander took over head coaching duties, EMU has posted a winning record against the B1G in three out of four seasons.
ALEXANDER NEARS 300 CAREER WINS: EMU Head Coach Jay Alexander (287-284) is 13 wins away from recording his 300th victory as the head man of a collegiate baseball program. Alexander is in his fifth season coaching the Eagles and has guided his teams to a record of 126-134 (.485). In six seasons at Wayne State, the 1996 graduate of the Division II school led the Warriors to a 161-148 (.521) ledger.
The 41-year-old Alexander (3-30-72) became the first African-American head coach in EMU baseball history when he took over for current Michigan State Head Coach Jake Boss, Jr. He won his 250th-career game as a head coach when the Eagles topped Northern Illinois, 4-2, in the MAC Tournament, May 25, 2011.
THIS IS ACTUALLY TRUE: Believe it or not, it was Michigan State, not Eastern Michigan, that was the first team to play a game at Oestrike Stadium this season. Due to unplayable field conditions in East Lansing, March 22-24, the Spartans had to move their four-game series with Oakland down to Ypsilanti. The Eagles were supposed to open their home slate with the Oestrike Classic, March 15-17, but had to move that event down to Kentucky because of snowy conditions.
EAGLES COMING OFF MAC SERIES WIN: The Eagles clinched a series victory against Ohio University Easter Sunday, March 31, with a convincing 13-6 win at Oestrike Stadium. EMU pounded out 16 hits and four EMU players turned in multiple-hit outings. The top of EMU's lineup was lethal Sunday as hitters one through four combined to go 10-for-17. Sam Ott led the way with a 3-for-5 day which included his second homer of the year and a season-high five RBI. Ott also notched his 10th double of the season and was one-of-five Eagles to record a two-bagger. Brian Hill (2-1) and Paul Schaak (2-1) each recorded victories over the weekend and Kristian Calibuso notched his first save since the 2011 MAC Tournament.
