EMU freshman women’s track star earns her first MAC weekly award

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –  The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday, April 17, that Eastern Michigan University women's track and field star Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario - Mother Teresa) has been named the league's Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending, April 14.

This is the first MAC weekly award Newman has received in her young EMU career, earning the distinct honor following a record-tying vault at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., April 12.

The Delaware, Ontario native tied a Canadian Junior National outdoor record with her victory in the pole vault, leaping 13-feet 9.25-inches (4.20 meters). Newman already holds the Canadian Junior National indoor record as well as the EMU indoor record in the pole vault. The Mid-American Conference Indoor champion's mark at the Sea Ray Relays was just two inches short of the EMU outdoor record held by Jessica Hemmingway set back in 2011. The leap also puts Newman at the top of the MAC as she has jumped four inches higher than the second-best conference pole vaulter so far this outdoor season.

Newman continues her strong freshman campaign at home with the rest of the Eagles as host of the EMU Twilight, April 19-20.
