CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Three members of the Eastern Michigan University indoor women's track and field team were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team for the 2012-13 indoor season, the conference announced, April 10. Tatijana Jacobson, Rachel Quaintance and Victoria Voronko represent EMU on the Academic All-MAC Team, while seven other Eagles made the honorable mention list.
Jacobson has proven her status as a team captain both on and off of the track. In her first year making the Acadeimic All-MAC Team, she has led the Eagles in the high jump, including a personal-best leap of 1.83 meters (6-feet 0-inches) at the season-opening Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7. That mark is the second-best jump in EMU indoor track and field history. Jacobson had four victories and three runner-up finishes during the indoor campaign. She finished runner-up in the high jump at the MAC Indoor Championships in Bowen Field House, Feb. 22-23, earning Second Team All-MAC honors. The Woodmoore, Ohio native is a communication major with a 3.26 GPA.
Quaintance, an EMU distance runner, earns the distinction of Academic All-MAC for the first time in her career. At the Grand Valley State University "Big Meet," Feb. 8-9, the senior from White Lake, Mich. turned in a season-best time of 9:59.79 in the 3,000-meter run. She took 12th at the MAC Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run. Quaintance is an elementary education major with a 3.99 GPA.
A native of Stavropol, Russia, Voronko finds herself on the Academic All-MAC Team for the first time as well. She has been recognized for her performance on and off the track throughout the season having been named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on two separate occassions, Dec. 24 and Feb. 10. The sophomore sensation shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 9:23.33 at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 9, breaking the previous mark of 9:32.61, by over nine seconds, set by Carrie Gould back in 1999. The record-breaking time also ranks as the second best time in Mid-American Conference history behind current Ohio University track athlete Juli Accurso, who holds the top time of 9:21. Voronko tallied a pair of runner-up finishes at the MAC Indoor Championships in the mile and 3,000-meter run to make Second Team All-MAC. She is an individualized studdies program major with a 3.90 GPA.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
