3/9/2013 6:16:00 PM | Softball

EMU dropped Florida A&M 6-2 Saturday morning

BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team scored six runs in the first three innings against Florida A&M Saturday, March 9, in its final game of the 2013 Florida Atlantic University Invitational. The Eagles (8-8) scored three runs to open up the game and never looked back as they knocked-off the Rattlers (5-17) at the FAU Softball Stadium.

Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) each led the offensive charge with a pair of base knocks and a pair of RBI. Stanton slugged her second homer of the 2013 campaign, while Lucas slapped a double and the first homer of her career. Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) had a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 and Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-Saint Francis De Sales) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) also had a multi-hit day going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the circle, Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) got the start, going the first five innings. Rich (4-2) picked up the win after surrendering two runs on seven hits. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) went the final two innings without surrendering a hit, punching out three Rattlers. Jenn Lindsey (2-11) was charged with the loss for Florida A&M after being touched for six runs, five earned, on seven hits in three innings.

EMU opened the scoring quickly in the first inning as they put up three runs. Nicholson hit a one-out single and stole second to get into scoring position. After another out, Herron roped a single to left field, scoring Nicholson and giving Eastern an early 1-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Stanton hit a big fly to left field to put the Eagles up 3-0.

The scoring did not stop in the first as the Green and White extended its lead to four in the second. Davidson led off the inning with a single and was moved into scoring position by a sacrifice bunt from Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport). After moving to third on a fly ball to right, Davidson scored on a throwing error by the Rattlers.

Eastern plated its final two runs in the third when Stanton ripped a one-out single and Lucas blasted the first long ball of her career to put the Eagles up 6-0.

Florida A&M scraped across two runs in the final four innings, but the Eagles took the final game of their 11-game trip to the Sunshine State, 6-2.

The Green and White are off until Friday, March 15, when it travels down to Louisville, Ky. for a tournament at the University of Louisville, the Louisville Classic. Eastern opens up the Louisville Classic with the University of Wisconsin Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. and will finish up Friday's action with a 5 p.m. first pitch against the host Louisville.
