Eagles Suffer 6-1 Setback to No. 11 Louisville

EMU was handed its 10th loss of 2013 to a ranked Cardinals squad
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – After mustering just two hits, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a contest to the No. 11-ranked University of Louisville, 6-1, Friday, March 15, at the 2013 Louisville Softball Classic.
The Eagles (8-10) were held to just two hits, a single from Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) and an RBI double from Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-Saint Francis De Sales).
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) got the start for EMU and was charged with the loss. Ignowski (4-2) surrendered six runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks in five innings of work. Lindsay Rich (Perrsyburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) tossed the final inning without allowing a hit. Caralisa Connell (14-2) earned the win for the Cardinals after punching out 10 and scattering just one run on two hits.
Louisville got on the board first in the opening frame when Jordan Trimble slapped a one-out homer to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles held Louisville off the board until the fourth when Jasmine Smithson-Willet scored Whitney Arion on an infield single to make it 2-0. The Cardinals added another in the fifth when Trimble crossed the plate on a Maggie Ruckenbrod double. Louisville extended their lead to 6-0 in the sixth when they added three runs on three hits.
Eastern managed its only ruin in the seventh. Nicholson singled up the middle to lead off the inning and scored on the next at-bat when Herron roped a double to left-centerfield to make the final 6-1 tally.
EMU continues action at the Lousiville Softball Classic Saturday, March 16, when they take on the University of Wisconsin at 12:30 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium, before squaring off with No. 24-ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heels at 5:30 p.m.
