Eastern Downs Seawolves, 5-4, in Extra Inning Affair

3/8/2013 3:45:00 PM | Softball

Lindsay Rich picked up her third win of the 2013 campaign

BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – After surrendering allowing Stony Brook University to tie the game up in the seventh, the Eastern Michigan University softball team rallied to score a run in the eighth to drop the Seawolves, 5-4, at the Florida Atlantic University Softball Stadium Friday, March 8, as part of the 2013 FAU Invitational.

Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) led the offensive charge for the Eagles (7-7) with a pair of RBI, while Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) had a double, an RBI and a run scored. Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) was the starter for the Green and White, going 5.2 innings in Boca Raton. Wells struck out five and allowed three runs on seven hits without picking up a decision. Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) notched the victory for EMU, tossing the final 2.1 innings. Rich (3-2) was touched for just one run on a pair of hits, while striking out two. Jane Sallen (0-5) went the complete game for Stony Brook (6-10) and allowed five runs, two earned, on four hits while walking three, with a trio of punch outs.

Eastern opened up the scoring in the first inning by taking advantage of a trio of Stony Brook miscues. Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) led off the inning by reaching on an error by the Seawolves' second baseman. Nicholson then used an error by the pitcher to advance Blaharski and reach first. Both runners again advanced on a passed by, making it second and third with no outs. Herron knocked in Blaharski on the third Stony Brook error of the inning and Nicholson later scored when Stanton hit a grounder to short, making it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.

In the third, EMU added to its lead. Nicholson started the inning with a leadoff walk and later stole second. She was driven in by Herron who singled scoring Nicholson from second to put the Eagles up 3-0.

The Green and White extended its lead again in the sixth by adding another run. Coquillard led off with a double to right, and was later singled in by Staton to lifted one to center to give EMU a 4-0 edge.

Stony Brook came roaring back in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. After getting the first two outs, Wells got into some trouble as the Seawolves connected on three straight hits including a double by Gina Bianculli which scored a pair to make it 4-2. In the next at-bat Jessica Combs ripped a double to score Bianculli from second bringing Stony Brook to within one, prompting EMU coach Karen Baird to go to her bullpen and bring in Rich. Rich walked the first batter but was able to get out of the two on, two out jam by picking up a strikeout.

Stony Brook proved to be a thorn in the Eagles' side in the seventh as Shayla Giosia led off the inning with a double. After Rich set down the next two batters Jessica Zeilman stepped into the box to rip a single up the middle, scoring Giosia and knotting the game up at 4 runs apiece, sending the game into extra innings.

Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) was placed on second to start the eighth per the international tiebreaker rules. Blaharski moved Davidson up on a fielder's choice and Nicholson scored the freshman on a single to left field in the next at-bat giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

Rich was able to keep the Seawolves off the board in the bottom half to give the Green and White its second win in a row.

EMU continues the FAU Invitational Saturday, March 9, when it takes on Florida A&M for a 9 a.m. contest at the FAU Softball Stadium.
