Seniors Cassar, Cicchini, Fuller and Kurkmilis to compete for final time in Bowen Field House

MEET PROGRAM

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
Following its highest score of the season against Northern Illinois, March 3, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will return to Bowen Field House as host of the Eagle Invitational, March 9, at 7 p.m. The Eagles (3-8) will welcome the Air Force Academy (5-10), Kent State University (9-2) and the University of Alaska Anchorage (4-5) to Ypsilanti for the quadrangular meet.

FINAL FOR FOUR IN BOWEN: The Eagle Invitational will be the final meet in Bowen Field House for four EMU gymnasts. Seniors Brittany Cassar, Camille Cicchini, Amanda Fuller and Kristina Kurkmilis will compete in their final home meet as Eagles, one more chance to improve their career-highs at home. Cassar currently set a new personal-record 9.825 on the floor against Southeast Missouri State, March. 3. Fuller tied two career-highs in that meet, recording 9.825 on both the vault and the floor. Speaking of the vault, Kurkmilis tallied a season-high 9.825 as well, tying her career best. She also found a 9.800 on the floor that tied a personal-high. Finally, Cicchini will look to improve on her 9.800 career-best, set this year against Bowling Green State University, Jan. 27.

CAREER DAY FOR KHADIJAH: After sitting out due to having the flu, March 1, against Northern Illinois, freshman Khadijah Hudson put up a career-best performance against Southeast Missouri State, March 3. Hudson won the all-around competition with a 39.175, tying for the third-best mark in EMU history. The judges awarded Hudson a career-high 9.875 on the floor for a third place finish and the 10th highest mark in school history while also leading the Eagles on the bars with a 9.800, a career-high. The freshman phenom also tallied a 9.825 for a third-place tie on the vault, a mark that also tied her personal best. Hudson was named MAC Gymnast of the Week for her career performance, her second conference award of the year.

EAGLES SWEEP MAC WEEKLY AWARDS: Khadijah Hudson was not the only Eagle to receive a MAC weekly award. Teammate and redshirt senior Amanda Fuller took home her first career MAC award as the Specialist of the Week for her weekend performances against Northern Illinois University, March 1, and Southeast Missouri State, March 3. Fuller recorded a 9.800 or better in each of the four events she competed in. Against NIU, she tallied scores of 9.800 to finish runner-up and third place on the floor and vault, respectively. The Hamilton, Ont. native stepped up her routines against SEMO, recording career-highs on both the vault and floor with a 9.825 in each event.

LOOKING AT THE POSITIVES: Although the Eagles dropped a pair of meets this past weekend, there were many positives to take away from their latest loss against Southeast Missouri State, March 3. EMU recorded season-highs for overall team score (194.675), on the bars (49.175) and on the floor (49.100). In addition to exceptional team scores, the EMU gymnasts set or tied 15 career-highs against the Redhawks.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: The Falcons of Air Force enter the meet with a record of 5-10 on the 2013 campaign, coming off of a victory at home against Seattle Pacific, March 2. The Kent State Golden Flashes are 9-2 on the year, victors of seven straight, including five wins over MAC opponents. The team making the longest trip to Ypsilanti is the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, sporting a 4-5 record as of March 5 that includes a loss to EMU, Feb. 17

CHIPPEWAS AWAIT: The Green and White will travel north to Mount Pleasant, Mich., March 16, to face in-state rival Central Michigan University in the last Mid-American Conference meet before the MAC Championships, March 23.
