Ignowski remains undefeated on the 2013 campaign
BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan softball team used nine hits to drop in-state rival Michigan State University, 6-4, Thursday, March 7. This was EMU's first game in the 2013 Florida Atlantic University Invitational.
The Eagles' (6-7) offense was led by Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) and Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) who each had a pair of hits in the win. Amanda Staton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township), Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-Saint Francis De Sales) and Courtney Loe (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford (West Liberty)) each had an RBI, while Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) picked up the first RBI of her career.
Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) picked up the win for Eastern. Ignowski (5-0) kept an unblemished record after tossing three innings and allowing four runs, two earned, and striking out a pair. Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) tossed the final four innings for the Eagles without allowing a run.
Eastern opened the scoring in the first, taking a 1-0 lead. Blaharski singled to lead off and later moved around to third. She was scored by Stanton on a sacrifice fly to put EMU up.
The Spartans return-fired in the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. MSU needed just one hit and took advantage of an EMU error to score a pair of runs. The Spartans later used a pair of hits to score a run in the third, making it 3-1 in favor of the Spartans.
Eastern took the lead back in the bottom-half with a three-spot. Stanton hit a one-out single and Lucas singled in the next at-bat to put runners at first and second. Loe ripped a double scoring Stanton and Lucas moved to third. Hostetler scored Lucas on a bunt in the next at bat, while Loe came around to score on an error by the MSU third baseman, making it 4-3 in the Eagles favor.
Michigan State tied it up in the fourth with a run on three hits, but the Eagles responded in the bottom half with a pair of their own. Blaharski reached on an error and later stole second. Coquillard singled to score the leadoff man and then scored on a Herron double to reach the final score of 6-4.
The Eagles continue the FAU Invitational Friday, March 8, with a doubleheader. EMU takes on Stony Brook at 9 a.m. and then square off with Kansas at 1 p.m. at the FAU Softball Stadium.
