Eagles Split Double Dip with Florida International

3/6/2013 9:55:00 PM | Softball

EMU won the first game, 5-4, but dropped the second, 4-1

MIAMI, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split its doubleheader with Florida International University Wednesday, March 6. Eastern (5-7) was able to drop the Panthers (15-10) in the first game, 5-4, while stumbling in the second, 4-1.

Game One

The Eagles used a four-run third to propel themselves past the Panthers in the opener, as they scored five runs on seven hits in the opening game of the twinbill. Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) led the offensive charge with a three-RBI double, while Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) posted a pair of base knocks with an RBI and Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) had a pair of runs scored.

In the circle, Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) tossed her fourth complete game in as many starts. Ignowski (4-0) kept her record unblemished as she allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits. The senior struck out three and walked four. Mariah Dawson was charged with the loss for the Panthers after surrendering five runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings. Despite striking out five in three innings, Dawson (3-7) picked up her seventh loss of the 2013 campaign. Shelby Graves tossed the final four innings for FIU. She allowed just one hit the rest of the game.

Eastern opened up the scoring when Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-Saint Francis De Sales) knocked in Coquillard on a two-out single in the first inning. EMU did not score again until a four-run outburst in the third inning. Blaharski led off the inning with a single and later stole second. Coquillard reached on a fielder's choice moving the base runner to third. Stanton drove a ball through the left side, scoring Blaharski to make it 2-0. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lucas came to the plated and ripped a double to right field. The double cleared the bases and gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead with three innings to play.

The five run lead proved to be enough although FIU scored two runs in the bottom of the third, a run in the fourth and one in the seventh. Ignowski was able to get out of a no-out runner on third jam in the seventh, allowing just one run to keep the lead and bring home a win for Eastern.

Game Two

The Eagles did not have the same luck in the nightcap of the doubleheader, dropping the game, 4-1. Despite a stellar pitching performance from Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) who allowed four unearned runs, the Eagles were unable to muster up the offense to top the Panthers. Wells (0-5) pitched all six innings for the Eagles and was unable to pickup her first win of the season. Corinne Jenkins picked up the win for FIU after surrendering just one unearned run in the game. Jenkins (7-1) struck out eight batters in her third complete game of the season.

The Green and White managed just four hits in the loss, two of which came off the bat of Coquillard, who also had EMU's only RBI. Blaharski had a single, while Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Eagles struck first in the opening inning after Nicholson singled and advanced to third on a pair of errors, setting the stage for Coquillard. The Niles, Mich. native ripped a single to left-centerfield, scoring Nicholson and giving EMU an early 1-0 lead, although it did not last long.

The Panthers struck for four runs in the bottom of the second. Kennah Orr led the inning off with a single for the Panthers. Krystal Garcia later singled, putting runners at first and second with one out. After another Panther out, devastation struck in the form of a two out error which gave FIU a 2-1 lead after a pair scored. Later Kayla Burri hit an RBI infield single to give the Panthers a 3-1 edge. In the next at-bat, Aleima Lopez ripped a single through the left side, giving FIU the final 4-1 tally as neither team could muster any offense through the remainder of the game.

Eastern continues its trip through the Sunshine State when it returns to Boca Raton, Fla., March 7-9, for the Florida Atlantic University Invitational. The Eagles open the invite up with an in-state rivalry matchup as they take on Michigan State University Thursday at 1 p.m. at the FAU Softball Stadium.
