Eagles Drop 11-3 Road Matchup with Florida Atlantic

Despite three runs in the opening inning, EMU could not prevail
BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a road contest Monday, March 4, against Florida Atlantic University, 11-3, in five innings. The Eagles were run-ruled after FAU scored four runs in the fifth at FAU Softball Stadium.
Eastern (4-6) had three runs on six hits. Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, while Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. FAU was led by Laura Mann who went 2-for-2 with six RBI for the Owls.
Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) went two innings in the loss. Rich (1-2) allowed six runs, one earned, on six hits, while striking out a pair. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) went the final 2.1 innings for EMU. She surrendered five runs, four earned, on five hits and punched out four. Taylor Fawbush (3-6) went a complete game, tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Eastern opened the scoring in the first inning by putting up a three-spot. Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) was the first base runner for EMU after ripping a one-out single. Coquillard scored her on the next at-bat with a double to right-centerfield. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) reached on a walk and was later driven in on a two-out, two-RBI single off the bat of Lucas, making it 3-0 in favor of EMU.
FAU return-fired in the bottom of the first with one run on an RBI single from Mann. Mann slugged a grand slam in the second to give the Owls their first lead of the game, 6-3, after Florida Atlantic posted five runs on three hits.
In the fourth, Mann struck again using a sacrifice fly to give the Owls a 7-3 lead with a sacrifice fly. FAU sewed up the win in the fifth posting four runs on four hits to give them the final 11-3 tally.
Eastern takes a day off before heading to Miami, Fla. for a doubleheader with Florida International University. Game time is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 6.
