Ott paces EMU offense in 16-hit attack
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team clinched a series victory against Ohio University Easter Sunday, March 31, with a convincing 13-6 win at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (12-14; 2-4 MAC) pounded out 16 hits and four EMU players turned in multiple-hit outings.
The Green and White scored in all but two innings en route to winning a Mid-American Conference series for the first time in 2013. The Bobcats (5-21; 2-4 MAC) tried to fight back from a 10-1 deficit with a four-run seventh, but fell well short and dropped a second straight MAC series.
The top of EMU's lineup was lethal Sunday as hitters one through four combined to go 10-for-17. Sam Ott led the way with a 3-for-5 day which included his second homer of the year and a season-high five RBI. Ott also notched his 10th double of the season and was one-of-five Eagles to record a two-bagger.
Daniel Russell (3-for-5) had one of those doubles and also scored three runs out of the leadoff spot. John Rubino had a nice afternoon in the two-hole, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Lee Longo (2-for-3) and Jamie Simpson (1-for-2) also registered doubles, with Longo recording an RBI and Simpson driving in two.
Austin Williams (1-for-3) earned RBI in each of the three games this weekend with two Sunday. Finally, Dae Bowden went 2-for-5 out of the No. 9 spot and hit his second triple of the year.
Paul Schaak (2-1) earned the victory and pitched six strong innings before hitting his wall in the seventh. The junior lefty's final line was 6.1 innings pitched with five earned runs, eight hits and four strikeouts.
Connor Sitz's (0-4) struggles continued on the hill for the Bobcats in a three-inning, five-earned-run outing. Sitz was the only pitcher on the Ohio squad to record a strikeout on the day. Offensively, Ohio cranked out 12 hits, with Jake Madsen (3-for-5) and Cody Gaertner (3-for-5) setting the pace.
Schaak needed just five pitches to get through the top of the first. His offense rewarded him with a one-run cushion in the bottom of the frame as Longo singled home Russell, who led off with a base hit.
Ohio tied the score, 1-1, in the second. Tyler Wells singled and was followed by Kyle Dean, who cranked a shot to the centerfield wall for an RBI double.
Rubino hit a looping fly ball to just the right spot in left-center field for a one-out double in the third. Ott then poked a line-drive off the right-field wall for another two-bagger while scoring Rubino to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The doubles kept coming as Simpson nearly had has fourth homer of the year but settled for a two-RBI double off the top of the wall. Bowden capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single past a diving Ben Otto at third base to make it 5-1 Eagles.
Eastern Michigan's offense continued to click in the fifth as Williams smacked the first pitch he saw through the left side and plated Adam Sonabend and Longo to make it a 7-1 contest. Russell preserved the six-run lead with a great running catch to deny Wells an RBI and extra bases in the top of the sixth. Schaak then struck out Gaertner for his fourth of the day to end the frame.
Ott tacked on two more runs with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth. The junior turned on a 1-0 offering and cleared the right-field wall. Later in the inning, Longo came around to score on a fielding error by Otto and made it a nine-run contest, 10-1.
The Bobcats slashed into their deficit with a four-run seventh. An Otto double scored the inning's first run and a Nate Squires two-RBI single chased Schaak from the mound. Reliever Mike Marsinek also allowed a run before making the third out. Suddenly, it was a 10-5 game.
EMU squashed any thoughts of an Ohio comeback with two more runs in the seventh. Ott hit a seeing-eye single through the infield and scored two with the bases loaded and the Eagles went back up by seven, 12-5.
The Green and White scored a final run in the eighth on a passed ball and Ohio added another in the ninth to put the final score at 13-6 for the home club.
The Eagles take a break from MAC play to host Michigan State University in a midweek contest Wednesday, April 3 at Oestrike Stadium.
