The Eagles dropped a non-conference matchup to its Mid-American Conference foe
BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its second straight game at the 2013 FAU Classic Saturday, March 2, as it fell, 9-1, to fellow Mid-American Conference member institution, Ball State University.
The Eagles (3-5) scored just one run on four hits, while making one error. BSU (8-4) was able to take advantage of shaky EMU pitching, which allowed six walks, to score nine runs on seven hits. Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) had the only RBI for the Eagles after going 1-for-3 on the day.
Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) made the start for Eastern and was bounced out of the circle after being touched for three runs on three hits in just 1.1 innings of work. Rich (1-1) walked one batter and was charged with her first loss of the 2013 campaign. Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) tossed the final four innings for EMU and surrendered six runs, four earned, on four hits, while punching out five in the loss. Kelsey Schifferdecker threw a complete game for the Cardinals in her fourth win of the season. Schifferdecker (4-0) allowed just one run on four hits, walking three and striking out just one batter.
The Eagles opened up the scoring in the first inning by plating Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) on a two-out singe from Coquillard. However, that was the only damage the Green and White could muster in the game.
Ball State took their lead in the bottom of the second when they scored three runs on a pair of hits. Taylor Rager led the inning off with a walk for the Cardinals but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat. With a runner on first and one out Selena Reyna was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, setting the stage for Jessica Craft. Craft ripped a two-RBI double up the middle to score a pair and Taylor Cox knocked in Craft to give BSU a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals put up another three-spot in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, scoring three runs on two hits and an error. Cox led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on an error by Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic). With runners at first and second with no outs, Hanne Stuedemann drove in a pair of runs on a triple to left-centerfield. Stuedemann was knocked in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Audrey Bickel later in the inning to give BSU the 6-1 tally.
Ball State completed the run-rule win in the bottom of the sixth when Bickel belted a three-run homer to give the Cardinals the final 9-1 lead.
