LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team was downed by Big Ten opponent the University of Wisconsin, 7-2, Friday, March 14, in its first game of the 2013 Louisville Softball Classic. The Eagles (8-9) held a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but surrendered seven runs in the next two innings and fell to the Badgers (20-3).
Eastern had three student-athletes post multi-hit games with Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) leading the way, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and a pair of RBI. Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) and Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-Saint Francis De Sales) each posted a pair of base knocks.
In the circle, Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. Wells (0-6) went the first 1.2 innings and walked three. Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) finished the game for the Eagles, tossing the final 4.1 innings without allowing a run. She scattered three hits and punched out four. Meghan McIntosh earned the win for the Badgers, tossing a complete game, allowing two runs. McIntosh (5-2) struck out 11 in seven innings of work.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first when Nicholson reached on a one out single. In the next at-bat Coquillard blasted her third long ball of the season to put EMU on top 2-0. It was the 20th home run in Coquillard's career, moving her into fourth all-time in Eastern Michigan's history.
Wisconsin answered in the bottom half with an unearned run. Shannel Blackshear roped a single up the middle with runners at first and third to make it a 2-1 tally. It was the six run second that proved to be the difference. Maggie Strange hit a two-run big fly, giving the Badgers their first lead of the game, 3-2. Later with the bases loaded, Stephanie Peace was hit by Wells to put the Badgers up 4-2. Whitney Massey drew a walk in the next at-bat, scoring another for Wisconsin. The following batter, Blackshear, hit a fly ball to centerfield, deep enough to score the runner from third. A single from Michelle Mueller gave UW the final run of the game before Head Coach Karen Baird brought in Rich to stop the bleeding.
Eastern continues the Louisville Softball Classic this evening, March 14, with a game against the host school, the University of Louisville, at 5 p.m. The Cardinals are ranked No. 11 in the most recent USA Today and NFCA Coaches' Poll.
