Freshman cards a second-round 76 as Eagles sit in eighth as a team
PINEHURST, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) -- Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) sits third individually with a 146 (70-76) as the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team moved up to eighth place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, March 11. The Eagles have shot a combined two-day team score of 616 (299-317), 17 strokes behind first-place scores from Old Dominion University (286-313) and Virginia Commonwealth University (291-308).
Grehan, the freshman from Ireland, put together a solid round of 76 on the tough, famed Pinehurst No. 2 course, where the average score rose above 81.
Senior Spencer Slade (Saline, Mich.-Saline-Savannah State) was tied with his teammate, Grehan, after the two shot opening-round 70s. However, the senior from Saline, Mich. faced the challeges of the No. 2 course, shooting an 82 for a two-day total of 152 (70-82), tying for 18th-place.
Two other Eagles shot below the day's scoring average as senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos) carded a 79 and junior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) recorded an 80. Olsen's two-day score of 158 (79-79) positions him in a tie for 46th, while Churchill-Smith sits tied for 58th with a 160 (80-80).
Although Monday's round was played on the par-72, 7,393-yard layout at Pinehurst No. 2, Tuesday's final round will return to where the action began on Sunday. The tournament finishes with 18 holes, March 12, at Pinehurst No. 6, a 6,819-yard, par 71 course. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
