Five run fifth takes Bulldogs out

KENNESAW, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – In her first start of the 2013 campaign, Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg), tossed a complete game shutout victory for the Eastern Michigan University softball team. Eastern was able to top Butler University for the second time this season, 8-0.

The Eagles (2-2) scored eight runs on five hits, with Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) leading the way going 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-St. Francis De Sales) and Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Catholic Central) each drove in a pair of runs, while Cassidy Jenkins (Columbus, Ohio-St. Francis De Sales) drove in one as well.

Rich (1-0) went five complete innings, walking just two and striking out one. The Perrysburg, Ohio native allowed just three hits in her first win of the season.

Eastern opened the game scoring two runs on a hit and two errors in the first innings. Blaharski poked the first hit of the game and stole second and third to get into scoring position. She later crossed the plate to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) touched home on an error by the Butler catcher.

The Eagles struck again in the third. Blaharski walked to lead off and then followed it up with another steal of second base. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) drove in Blaharski with a single to centerfield, making it 3-0 in favor of EMU.

After not scoring for a pair of innings, the Eagles erupted for five runs in the fifth. Davidson led off the inning with a walk and Blaharski moved her up to second with a single. Stanton took a walk, loading the bases. Coquillard grounded into a double play, which left the bases loaded with one out. Herron came up and drove a ball to leftfield bringing home a pair. Nicholson followed her with a triple to right, scoring another two, making it 7-0. The final run of the game was scored to mercy-rule the Bulldogs when Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Nicholson.

EMU continues the 2013 campaign Sunday, Feb. 10, when they complete their portion of the Georgia Tech/Kennesaw State Invitational. The Eagles square off with KSU at noon at the Bailey Softball Complex.
