Comeback Falls Short in 6-5 Setback to Kennesaw State

The Eagles finish the Georgia Tech/Kennesaw State Invitational with a 2-3 record
KENNESAW, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite scoring two runs in the seventh to tie the game at five runs apiece, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Kennesaw State University Sunday, Feb. 10. The loss was the final game for EMU at the Georgia Tech/Kennesaw State Invitational where they finished the five-game slate with a 2-3 record.
The Eastern (2-3) offense was paced by multi-hit performances from Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) and Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Catholic Central). Blaharski went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, a double and a walk, while Nicholson posted a 2-for-4 game with a run batted in. Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) posted a pair of RBI on a double in the second, while Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township).
Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) made the start for the Green and White going 2.2 innings, allowing four runs, on five hits. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) tossed the next 1.2 innings for EMU, but was touched for a run on a hit, while allowing three walks. Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) went the final two innings in the loss. Wells (0-3) was charged with the loss after allowing a run on four hits. Amanda Henderson (3-0) was credited with the win for the Owls after tossing the final three innings and striking out five Eagles.
Kennesaw State opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, posting a three-spot. Sara Sikes led off the inning with a single to right-centerfield. A hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases for KSU, Angie Dascoli grounded into a fielder's choice to score Sikes. In the next at-bat Kaylee Williams hit a fly ball to centerfield scoring Carly Van Auken to make it 2-0 in favor of the Owls. Caitlin Fowler single drove in a run with a single to the shortstop giving them a 3-0 edge.
Eastern fought back scoring a pair of runs in the second. Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) singled to centerfield but was tossed out at second on a fielder's choice by Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). With two outs, Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) walked to put runners at first and second, setting the stage for Lucas. Lucas roped a double to centerfield scoring both Duffy and Hostetler to make it 3-2.
The Eagles were able to tie the game up in the third. Blaharksi led the inning off with a double to left-centerfield, and advanced to third on a groundout by Stanton. Nicholson was able to drive in Blaharski in the next at-bat with a single through the left side, knotting the score at three apiece.
The tie was short-lived as Kennesaw State answered with a run in the bottom half of the third. Alexis Collins drove in Williams on a double down the leftfield line to give the Owls a 4-3 edge. KSU added to their lead in the fifth when Van Auken singled in Kendal Robinson in the fifth take a 5-3 lead with two outs.

She later moved up to third on a groundout by Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange). In the next at-bat, Blaharski walked putting runners at first and third with one out. Stanton grounded out to second in the next at-bat, scoring Lucas and moving Blaharski to second. Nicholson followed Stanton with a single and a throwing error moved the runners up a bag, scoring Blaharski, tying the game at five runs each.

Eastern does not continue its 2013 campaign until March 1, when the Eagles travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for a tournament at Florida Atlantic University. EMU will open the FAU Tournament with a doubleheader, first taking on Jacksonville University at 1 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. match with Florida Atlantic.
