Whitenburg records pin for Eagles
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In the final Mid-American Conference dual-meet of the season, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a 31-6 decision to No. 10 Central Michigan University Friday evening, Feb. 8. The Eagles fall to 7-12 overall and finish MAC competition with a 1-4 record.
The Chippewas (13-3; 5-0 MAC) clinched the MAC regular season title, winning nine-of-10 matches.
"We had some opportunities to win some matches, but Central showed their experience and stopped us from doing so," said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. "We had five freshmen out there tonight and only one senior."
Redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg posted the lone victory of the evening for the Eagles, pinning Jackson Lewis at the 1:16 mark of the 197 lbs. bout. Whitenburg's victory earned him is third straight MAC triumph and pushed his season record to 7-6.
"Once the match is out of reach it becomes very 'selfish'," DelPorto added. "Whitenburg did himself a favor and came up with a big pin."
At 125 lbs. freshman Alexander Calandrino kept it close against No. 7 Christian Cullinan in a 4-0 setback. In his second match of the season, redshirt senior Filiberto Colon recorded an escape but no more in a 5-1 loss No. 7 Scotti Sentes.
After taking on No. 1-ranked Dustin Kilgore of Kent State University last week, Anthony Abro moved up to heavyweight to match up against No. 5 Jarod Trice. Abro and Trice wrestled to a scoreless tie until Trice came up with a takedown 11 seconds before the end of regulation. An escape put Abro on the scoreboard, but Trice took the match, 3-1, with an extra point for riding time.
Eastern Michigan finishes up the 2012-13 regular season at Bowen Field House Sunday, Feb. 17, against Iowa State University. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
