EMU finishes 2012-13 season 7-13 and 1-4 in the MAC

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped the 2012-13 regular-season finale to No. 22 Iowa State University, 39-0, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 17, at Bowen Field House. The Eagles finished the regular season 7-13 and 1-4 in the MAC, while the Cyclones improved to 9-4.

During the intermission of Sunday's contest, the EMU wrestling family honored former Head Coach Willie Gadson (1992-97) and members of the 1995-96 team that captured a Mid-American Conference championship.

"It is fitting that we honored the 1996 MAC Championship team because that team went through the same struggles we are experiencing and still found a way to win the title and send six guys to the NCAAs," remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. "Maybe history will repeat itself for the EMU wrestling team in a few weeks."

The Cyclones swept all 10 matches and held EMU grapplers to just a pair of takedowns. ISU recorded bonus points in seven matches with a pin and six major decisions.

The dual-meet started at 184 lbs. where redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah faced off against No. 17 Boaz Beard. Beard got on the board first with a takedown in the opening frame. To start the middle period, Beard chose the down position and managed a reversal and three nearfall points as a result. Hoballah was unable to mount a comeback in the third and fell by an 11-1 count to give ISU a 4-0 lead.

No. 7 Kyven Gadson used his speed to put redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg in a nearfall position seconds into the 197 lbs. bout. Whitenburg staved off the pin for over a minute, but Gadson delivered the final blow at the 1:37 mark to give the Cyclones a 10-0 advantage just two matches into the contest.

At heavyweight, redshirt senior Chris Eggert and No. 18 Matt Gibson wrestled to a scoreless tie through one period. Gibson used an escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead. That score held until the last 15 seconds of the match, when Gibson registered a final takedown. He went on to win, 3-0, for ISU's third-straight victory.

Iowa State kept the pressure on at 125 lbs., where Ryak Finch scored an early takedown and a pair of nearfall points for a 4-0 lead against freshman Alexander Calandrino. By the end of the first period, Finch had a 9-1 lead. Calandrino cut his opponent's riding time advantage down to 13 seconds in the middle period, but Finch won the fourth straight match for ISU by a 12-1 score.

Redshirt sophomore Jake Byers recorded an escape to halve his deficit to 2-1 in the first period of the 133 lbs. bout against John Meeks. Meeks tacked on five additional points including three nearfall tallies for a 7-1 lead before the first period ended. At the intermission, the Eagles were still without a win and trailed, 21-0.

Eastern Michigan's fortunes did not change after the break as redshirt junior Seth Schaner fell behind early and lost a 12-2 major decision to Luke Goettl at 141 lbs. It was the Cyclones' third consecutive major decision and fourth of the afternoon.

Redshirt freshman Michael Shaw tried to stop the bleeding at 149 lbs. against Max Mayfield. Shaw held his opponent to a single takedown in the first period and tied the score, 2-2, with EMU's first takedown of the afternoon midway through the second. Mayfield regained the lead, 4-2, on a reversal and held on for the 7-2 decision.

The 157 lbs. tussle between redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer and Logan Molina started at a furious pace. A Sulzer escape followed a Molina takedown and made it 2-1. That score held until the third period, when Sulzer recorded the escape to tie the match at two apiece. With under 20 seconds to go, Molina worked Sulzer to the edge of the mat and earned the decisive takedown in a 5-2 decision.

The Cyclones claimed their ninth-straight win at 165 lbs. as freshman Jacob Davis lost to No. 18 Michael Moreno by major decision, 13-4, at 165 lbs.

Redshirt junior Phillip Joseph gave the Eagles their first lead of the day, 2-0, with a first-period takedown of No. 16 Tanner Weatherman at 174 lbs. Joseph pulled ahead, 3-1, with an escape early in the second, and headed into the final two minutes with a 4-3 advantage. Weatherman pulled away in the third period, however, for a 12-4 major decision.

The Eagles will now turn their sights on the MAC Championships, March 10, in Buffalo, N.Y.
