BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – Two Eastern Michigan University wrestlers, redshirt juniors Nick Whitenburg and Phillip Joseph, earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships Sunday, March 10, at the Mid-American Conference Championships on the campus of the University at Buffalo. As a team, the Eagles placed eighth with a total of 44.5 points.
The University of Missouri ended Central Michigan University's 11-year reign as conference champions, totaling 136 team points and winning individual titles in four weight classes.
Whitenburg posted a 3-1 record with two pins to capture third place at 197 lbs. and earn his first-career trip to the NCAA Championships. The Temperance, Mich. native started the day off with a pin of Northern Illinois University's Parker Settecase at the 46-second mark. After falling to the consolation bracket, Whitenburg won his final two matches including the third-place bout against Ohio University's Phillip Wellington, 5-3.
Joseph, who was ranked last out of the eight competitors at 174 lbs. entering the day, fought his way to a fourth-place finish with a 2-2 record. The Lapeer, Mich. native lost his opening round bout to top-ranked Todd Porter from Missouri by a close 11-8 margin. He then went on to defeat CMU's Craig Kelliher and Kent State University's Sam Wheeler by scores of 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.
"I am really happy for Whit and Phillip," said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. "They both wrestled hard. Whit stepped up in a big way overcoming injuries and I am proud of his toughness."
Porter was upset in the second round and met up with Joseph once again in the third-place match. Joseph lost a 7-2 decision, but settled for fourth place with a berth to his second-straight national tournament already at hand.
At 157 lbs., redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer fell just shy of an automatic bid with a fourth-place finish. Sulzer was the only other EMU grappler besides Whitenburg to win his opening-round match when he bested NIU's Andrew Morse, 7-3. The EMU co-captain found his way into the third-place match after toppling Tommy Sasfy from KSU, 4-2. In that match, Sulzer and CMU's Luke Smith battled to a 2-2 draw until Smith came through with the extra point to win the tiebreaker in overtime.
Sulzer still has a chance to earn an at-large bid for his third-consecutive NCAA appearance. "I have my fingers crossed for Aaron to get an at-large bid," said DelPorto.
Hampered by injuries for much of the season, redshirt junior Jared Germaine (125 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto (133 lbs.) each went 1-3 Sunday and did not earn a top-four spot.
"I am disappointed overall with our results," DelPorto remarked about the day's events. "Although we are young that is not an excuse not to go after it and let it fly. I am excited for the offseason to figure out the direction of our team."
The NCAA Championships take place in Des Moines, Iowa Thursday-Sunday, March 21-24.
