Eagles continue Spring season in Arizona
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan women's golf team will continue its spring season in Arizona, competing at the Red Rocks Invitational, March 2-3. Northern Arizona University will host the Invitational at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
The two-day event will consist of 36 holes of match play. The first round will be played Saturday, March 2, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. MST. The second and final round will be Sunday, March 3, with an 8 a.m. MST shotgun start.
The field for the 2013 Red Rocks Invitational will include 21 teams – host Northern Arizona, British Columbia, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Northridge, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Washington, Grand Canyon, Idaho State, Montana State, North Dakota, Northern Kentucky, North Dakota, Oakland, Seattle, South Dakota, Southern Utah, Toledo, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, Xavier, Weber State and Western Michigan.
Oakcreek Country Club, designed by the famous father and son team of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., can truly be described as a work of art. The par 72, 18-hole championship golf course (6,084 yards) is nestled among the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona with views beyond compare and the golf course design a masterpiece.
Last year, Eastern Michigan carded a 298 in the final round of the invitational to capture a 14-stroke victory in the 20-team field, March 4, 2012. The Eagles posted a score of 603 for the tournament (305-297). Seattle University finished second with a 617 (309-308) and Xavier University was third with a team total of 619 (312-307).
EMU finished with seven players in the tournament's top 25, including Meredith Fairbairn who tied for second place after firing a 150 (79-71). Her two-round total is tied for the 13th lowest 36-hole mark in the program's history, and the best of her career.
