YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will host the 2013 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, Feb. 22-23, at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House.
"We are excited about hosting the championship, and we hope to have a great showing in front of our home crowd," commented EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. "Kent State looks to be the top team at this point, but we feel like we can be in the mix and we know that anything can happen in a championship like this. We always perform well at Bowen Fieldhouse, and we look forward to competing hard and having a total team effort on our home track this weekend."
The competition begins Friday, Feb. 22 with the women's pentathlon at 10:30 a.m., and the day will end with the men's distance medley at 7:30 p.m. The final day of competition starts at 10 a.m. with the men's weight throw, and the meet will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 4:35 p.m. Live results throughout the meet can be found at EMUEagles.com.
All 12 MAC institutions will participate in the women's conference championship: the University of Akron, Ball State University, Bowling Green State University, the University at Buffalo, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Kent State University, Miami University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, the University of Toledo and Western Michigan University.
EMU is hosting the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships for the first time since 2008. At that conference championship, the host Eagles captured the men's title while Akron was victorious for the women's championship.
The Green and White completed the 2012 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a sixth place finish, scoring 63 points at the meet held at the University of Akron, Feb. 25. Kent State claimed the conference crown after scoring 108.5 points. Rosie White, Shantavia Williams and Kate Wolanin were each named to the All-MAC First Team for their performances, while Meghan Powers was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Williams was crowned champion of the 400-meter dash with a 53.87, which ranks as the second best finish all-time in Eastern Michigan history.
Tickets for this year's meet are $10 for an adult and $5 for youth (ages 3-12) for a one day pass. Adults can purchase an all-session (both days) pass for $15 while it will cost youth $8 for the all-session pass. Students with MAC institution ID's will be admitted into the event for $2. While tickets will be sold at the door, the meet is expected to sell out. With only 1,250 tickets being sold for the meet, fans are encouraged to purchase pre-sale tickets online. Pre-sale tickets are now available to the public at EMUTix.com.
