BLANCO, Texas (EMUEagles.com) -- After a three month layoff, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team returned to the links and kicked off the 2013 spring season Sunday, Feb. 17, here at the Jim West Challenge at the par 72, 6,216-yard Vaaler Creek Golf Club course. The Eagles are in a three-way tie for third place after the first day of action with a team score of 640 (325-315).
The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Texas State University, features 12 schools The host Bobcats hold an 18-stroke edge on the leaderboard with a 621 (304-317) ahead of Illinois State University.
Eastern Michigan was led by a 154 (78-76) from junior Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill), which puts her in a tie for fourth. Senior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) is tied for 11th with a 156 (81-75), while Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) is tied for 23rd after carding a 161 (83-78).
Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) managed a 170 (83-87), while Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) tallied a 177 (91-86). Playing as an individual, Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) had rounds of 85 and 79 for a tie for 32nd place.
Illinois State's Rachel Powers sit as the individual lead through two rounds at four-over par.
Teams will conclude play 8:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, with the final 18 holes of the tournament.
