2013 recruiting class comprises four Michigan natives and one from Ontario

YPSILANTI, MIch. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's soccer Head Coach Scott Hall has announced the signing of five National Letters of Intent for the 2013 season. Stefanie Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-Oakville Soccer Club), Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy (Vardar Soccer Club)), Gabriella Mancini (Troy, Mich.-Athens (Michigan Football Club)), Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Michigan Alliance) and Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Michigan Alliance) will all don the Green and White when the Eagles kick off the regular season in August.

“We took the approach to find great student athletes who will help us climb to the top of the Mid-American Conference in both the classroom and field,” said Hall. “These student-athletes will help us do just that. Both Joe Malachino and I are excited to welcome in the 2013 class to the EMU family. We are looking forward to working with this group of talented players in our quest for a Mid-American Conference Championship.”

Barcelos brings a diverse array of skills to EMU to complement an already deep midfield. The Mississauga, Ontario native is has dual citizenship, Canadian and Portuguese, and was therefore able to play with the U19 Portuguese National team. “We believe her international experience at the 2012 European Championships will be helpful in her transition to the college game,” Hall added. “She is a very skilled player with great field vision and awareness for the game.”

Hirsch was recruited for her work ethic and ability to play anywhere on the field. The native of Troy, Mich. played club with Vardar and played for Coach Brian Zawislak at Troy High School. Hall noted, “Madison is a great technical soccer player who has a relentless work rate which we know will equate to a fantastic competitor and championship attitude.”

Mancini, a graduate of Troy Athens High School, will contribute her talents as a midfielder and defender who has the potential to be a dangerous facilitator. “Gabi can play a number of roles for this team across the back and even in the midfield,” said Hall. “We love her determination and passion for soccer. She uses the ball very well and can be a great distributor of the ball out of the back.”

Rollins is a natural attacker with ample speed and athleticism to penetrate opposing defenses. She played club soccer with Michigan Alliance. “Michelle can use her speed skill set to help us on the attack,” Hall remarked. “We are excited for her to join this team and add depth to our front line. She is a  player with great athleticism and she will be a very dangerous player up top for us.”

Washburn was also a member of Michigan Alliance and is well known for her defensive prowess. “Rachel is strong, fast, hard and great in the air,” said Hall. “We hope to see her mature quickly and join our already talented group of backs. She is type of player you want on your team and hate to compete against.”

“With our core team returning for 2013 and this group of student-athletes we believe we have a special team,” Hall remarked. “We cannot wait until August to get them all together!”
