Eagles Knock Off Warriors in 85-76 Victory

Eastern took down Wayne State in its only exhibition of 2013-14

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team earned an 85-76 victory over Wayne State University in its only exhibition contest of the 2013-14 campaign Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Convocation Center.
Freshman Cha'Ron Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio-Rogers) led the EMU offense as she tallied 20 points in her first contest for the Eagles, while Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Osseo) notched 14 and Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) netted 13 points. Freshman Haley Moore (Milford, Neb.-Milford) and Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) each had double-digit points as Moore had 12 and Fouty had 11. The Eagles defensive effort was led by Morton, Sweeney and Sashana Bucknor (New Haven, Conn.-Weaver) who each tallied three steals on the night, while Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Warriors had a pair of athletes notch double-doubles. Shareta Brown poured in 30 points and 15 rebounds on the night, while Imari Redfield notched 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors.
After Brown scored on the first possession of the evening, the Eagles got on the board shortly after, courtesy of a tip-in by Sweeney. After five minutes of play, the Green and White trailed, 9-7. Thomas drained a three and drew a Warrior foul, converting on the four-point swing to guide the Eagles to an 11-9 advantage.
Eastern put up a number of shots throughout the next four minutes but were unable to score on any of their attempts. Meanwhile, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run, with Brown scoring half the points for her squad in the offensive effort. The Eagles were able to quench their scoring drought at the 8:50 mark, when a pair of free throws by Watkins would bring the team within nine points, down 22-13.
The Eagles were able to make a run of their own in the second half of the period, going 15-2 backed by six points from Morton and five Warrior turnovers, which put the Green and White within one point with three minutes remaining in the opening half of the contest. A three-pointer by Sweeney at the minute mark knotted the contest up, 35-35, but a foul on Wayne's Kristen Long presented the Warriors with the opportunity to take the lead, which they advantage of on a pair of good free throw attempts.
A mid-range jumper from senior Sara Stone (Plymouth, Mich.-Salem) with three seconds left brought the Eagles within two points before the half closed out, 37-39.
Eastern came out of the locker room quick as Sweeney stole the ball right off the throw in and took the ball down court to draw a quick foul. The freshman went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to bring the Eagles within one of the Warriors. The Green and White continued the quick-paced offense as a give-and-go to Watkins and a steal from Morton brought EMU within one of Wayne State just four minutes into the second half of play.
A 10-second violation to the Warriors returned the ball back into the Eagles hands, as the EMU offense took advantage of the new rule put into place this season, knotting the score at 45-45 on a Bucknor lay-up.
Bucknor drew the foul on the play, allowing the Green and White to take its first lead since 14:55 of the first half. Wayne State knotted the score at 47-47 before Thomas drained a three pointer from beyond the arc that ignited the Eagle offense and started a seven point run.
Eastern capitalized on another 10-second violation with 14:48 left in the contest as Bucknor made two free throws to give the Eagles a 54-47 lead.
The Eagles took an eight point lead over the Warriors when Moore connected on a deep three from the corner, bringing the score to 57-49, EMU. Eastern continued to build on its lead as a steal from Bucknor drew a foul on the fast break, sending her to the free throw line for the third time. The New Haven, Conn. native put both shots through the rim, allowing the Eagles to take its largest lead of the contest at 63-54.
Wayne State did not give in as it went on a six-point run, coming within two of EMU, before Sweeny made back-to-back shots for the Eagles returning the momentum to the Green and White. A quick basket out of the media timeout extended the Eastern lead to 69-61 as Eastern continued a quick-tempo against the Warriors.
Moore came on in the clutch as the freshman drained back-to-back three pointers to break two ties with under two minutes left of play. The Eagles called a timeout, leading Wayne State 77-74, after Bucknor grabbed her third steal of the contest and converting on a Morton layup in the ensuing possession. Thomas stole the ball in the next trip down the court to make a fast break layup, extending the Eastern lead to 81-76 with 33 seconds left.

Eastern will return to action on Friday, Nov. 13 as the Eagles take on Madonna University in its first regular season contest of the 2013-14 season. The women's team will play after the conclusion of the men's regular season opener against Albion at noon. Tip off for the women is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center in the doubleheader event.
