MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– Closing out the 2013 campaign, the Eastern Michigan University football team dropped a 42-10 decision to in-state rival Central Michigan University on a chilly Friday afternoon at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, Nov. 29. With the loss, the Eagles end their season at 2-10, including 1-7 in Mid-American Conference play.

Bronson Hill (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Catholic Central) led the EMU offense with 167 yards on 25 carries. He surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career while becoming the first EMU running back to rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season since Anthony Sherrell accomplished the feat during the 2003 season. Hill also passed the 2,000-yard plateau in his EMU career with an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter, the 11th running back in program history to reach that mark.

Freshman Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. Johns Jesuit) completed 14-of-27 passes for 139 yards. Roback's primary target all afternoon was Dustin Creel (Industry, Pa.-Western Beaver) as the sophomore wide receiver made a career-high 10 catches for 109 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Derric Williams (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) led the Eagles in tackles with a personal-best 10 for the freshman linebacker. Pudge Cotton (Maywood, Ill.-Walther Lutheran) also tallied 10 tackles to go along with a fumble recovery. Also, redshirt freshman Mike Steals (North Braddock, Pa.-Woodland Hills) hauled in his first career interception.

The Chippewas (6-6, 5-3 MAC) were led by running back Zurlon Tipton who rushed 20 times for 216 yards, including four touchdowns. Cooper Rush threw for 92 yards on 9-of-14 passing. Wide out Mike Kinville led the CMU receiving corps with 32 yards on a pair of receptions.

The Eagles began the contest with the football, but fumbled on just their third play of the contest at their own 28-yard line. Four plays later, CMU notched the first points on the scoreboard as Zurlon Tipton found the end zone from four yards out, giving the Chippewas the early 7-0 advantage with 11:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following three straight punts combined between the two teams, Central increased its lead with another touchdown. The Chippewas marched 71 yards in 11 plays as Tipton capped the drive with a one-yard run on third-and-goal, increasing the margin to 14-0 just over 13 minutes into the contest. Five minutes later, Tipton continued to be a thorn in the Eagles' side, dashing 86 yards for his third score of the game to put Eastern in a deeper hole, down 21-0.

The Green and White answered the CMU score with a 24-yard field goal by Dylan Mulder (Saline, Mich.-Saline) on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that melted 6:29 off the clock. Hill was the primary factor on Eagles' scoring drive, taking six carries for 57 yards. On his third rush of the series, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native scampered 23 yards to pick up his 1,000th yard of the season.

The offense putting points on the board fired up the EMU defense as Kalonji Kashama (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-Brampton) sacked Rush, forcing a fumble by the CMU quarterback. Cotton recovered the ball at the CMU 21-yard line. However, a personal foul penalty on the first play of the drive stalled the Eagles, and Mulder's career-long 48-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, keeping the deficit at 18 points.

After the missed opportunity from the turnover, the Eagles defense clamped down once again, forcing a CMU punt. With just 1:01 left on the clock, Roback and the offense found themselves backed up at their own 15-yard line. Nonetheless, that did not stop them from scoring before the end of the first half. Hill began the drive with a 26-yard dash down the sideline to give EMU some breathing room before being pushed out-of-bounds to stop the clock. Two plays later, the junior running back ran 12 yards to put the Eagles in CMU territory. Then, on third-and seven, Roback found his favorite target as Creel hauled in 34-yard pass in the Chippewas' red zone. The freshman quarterback rushed the offense to the line, spiking the ball to stop time with just 13 seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, Roback threw a jump ball up to redshirt freshman tight end Cole Gardner (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia), who came down with the ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown, cutting the CMU lead to 11, 21-10, with six seconds left in the half and giving the Eagles momentum heading into the break.

Despite being outscored, the EMU offense racked up more total yards than Central in the first 30 minutes, 223-208. Hill paced the rushing attack with 119 yards on just 13 carries, averaging an astounding 9.1 yards per rush. Roback completed fifty percent of his passes, 10-of-20, for 94 yards and a touchdown. His favorite receiver in was Creel as the duo connected six times for 65 yards.

Tipton led the Chippewas in the opening half with 137 yards on the ground as three of his 12 carries resulted in touchdowns. Through the air, Rush was 8-of-11 for 83 yards.

Although the Eagles had the momentum at halftime, CMU opened up the second half with an 84-yard kickoff return by Courtney Williams to increase the advantage to 28-10. After an EMU punt, Tipton rushed 44 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game and increasing the Central lead, 35-10, with 9:36 left in the third quarter. The Chippewas would score one more time to finish off the game's scoring, securing the 42-10 victory.

The 2013 season finale marked the end of the careers of 14 Eagles: Tim Brown (Wai'anae, Oahu, Hawai'i-Kapolei), Donald Coleman (Detroit, Mich.-Orchard Lake St. Mary's-North Carolina State), Joe Fleming (Southfield, Mich.-Lathrup), Kody Fulkerson (Zanesville, Ohio-Maysville), Ja'Ron Gillespie (Washington, D.C.-Friendship Collegiate Academy), Javonti Greene (West Palm, Fla.-Royal Palm), Kashama, Sean Kurtz (Anaheim, Calif.-Canyon), Cy Maughmer (Glendale, Ariz.-Apache Junction-Glendale C.C.), Orlando McCord (Detroit, Mich.-Martin Luther King), Matt Price (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka), Shawn Sinawe (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and Mycal Swaim (Chico, Calif.-Pleasant Valley-Butte C.C.).
