EMU vs. Stanford Notes

YPSILANTI, Mich (EMUEagles.com)
-- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will take on No. 23 Stanford in its first-of-four matches at the Convocation Center, Sunday, Nov. 24, at 5:30 p.m. The Cardinal will make the short drive from Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti to wrestle the Eagles after they square off with No. 19 Michigan at 11 a.m.

SCOUTING No. 23 STANFORD: The Cardinal come into the weekend match with a 4-0 record, after defeating No. 15 Maryland, 17-16, Saturday, Nov. 16. Stanford will look to remain perfect as it takes on the University of Michigan, Saturday, Nov. 24, before heading to Ypsilanti to face off with the Eagles. Stanford is currently outscoring its opposition 113-38 on the young season, while tallying six pins, two tech falls, two major decisions and 14 decisions. The Cardinal have won 29 bouts and have dropped 11, its most losses coming against No. 15 Maryland when Stanford was only able to grab five wins en route to victory.
The Cardinal have three ranked wrestlers in their starting lineup as No. 3 Ryan Mango will headline the 133 lb. weight class, No. 17 Evan Silver will look to get the start at 125 lbs. and No. 20 Jim Watson will wrestle at the 165 lb. weight class. Stanford had four NCAA qualifiers a year ago, as Mango earned All-American honors, finishing fifth at 125 lbsThe Cardinal also had a strong showing at the Pac-12 Championships as Mango and senior Bret Baumbach were individual champions, while sophomore Evan Silver placed second and senior Dan Scherer finished fourth in their respective weight classes.

SERIES HISTORY: The Eagles and the Cardinal have met on the mat one time in the past eight seasons when both teams traveled to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Duals, Jan. 16, 2010. Stanford holds a 1-0 advantage over Eastern as it took a 26-15 victory over the Eagles. Stanford got off to a quick start as then-freshman Ryan Mango pinned his opponent at the 125 lbs weight class, giving the Cardinal a 6-0 lead. The Green and White came within three as it earned a decision in the 133 lb. weight class before then-freshman Bret Baumbach captured a major decision at 141 lbs. Eastern used two straight decisions from David Pienar and current student assistant coach Aaron Sulzer to come within one of the Cardinal but the effort was not enough as Stanford won the next four bouts before forfeiting the final match to give EMU six points and close the match out with a 26-15 Cardinal victory.

EAGLES SUFFER LOSS AT MSU: The Green and White saw its four-match win streak come to an end, Thursday, Nov. 21, as the Eagles fell to Michigan State, 24-9 in its first road dual of the 2013-14 season. EMU was the first to score as Matthew VanCuren notched a 6-3 decision in the first bout of the night, but the Spartans went on to win six-straight matches before the Eagles could find their groove again. Jared Germaine and Vincent Pizzuto each clinched decisions over their opponents to bring Eastern within nine of MSU, but it was not enough to grab a victory as a pin in the final tussle allowed Michigan State to take a 24-9 win.

PERFECT DUAL RECORDS: Although the Eagles suffered a team loss at Michigan State, both Jared Germaine and Vincent Pizzuto boast a 4-0 dual record remaining perfect in the 2013-14 campaign.
Germaine grabbed the Eagles second victory of the day at Michigan State when he took a high scoring 13-7 decision from MSU's Hermilo Esquivel. The Saginaw, Mich. native has a 4-0 overall record on the season, competing only in duals for EMU at the 125 lb. weight class.
Eastern won back-to-back bouts as the 133 lb. weight class saw a rematch between Pizzuto and Garth Yenter. The two met up in the first tournament of the season, when Yenter pinned Pizzuto at the MSU Open. EMU's North Jackson, Ohio native found the edge he needed in the rematch as he grabbed a 7-4 decision over Yenter to bring the Green and White within nine of Michigan State. Pizzuto has posted a 7-2 overall record on the season, falling twice at the MSU Open, but holds a 4-0 dual record.

OUTSCORING OPPOSITION: The Eagles are currently outscoring their opponents 142-52 on the young season as they have only allowed two teams to score in the double-digits through their first five duals. EMU dominated its first four opponents at the EMU Duals as it dropped only seven of its 40 bouts on the day, while averaging two pins per dual with eight total, including five in its first dual against Tiffin. The Green and White suffered its first loss of the season at Michigan State, but kept the Spartans to only one pin and six decisions keeping the score under 30 and maintaining a 90-point margin over all opposition.

GETTING IN THE RECORD BOOK EARLY: Eastern's five pins against Tiffin, Nov. 16, ranks as the second most falls in a dual in EMU laurels since the 2005-06 season as the Eagles recorded eight pins against Itasca Community College, Nov. 24, 2012, when they blanked the Vikings 57-0. Along with recording five pins, the Eagles also put up the fifth-largest amount of points in the past eight seasons with their 45-4 victory over Tiffin. The Green and White's largest victory came against Itasca, with its second largest win coming against Campbell, Jan. 15, 2011, when they defeated the Fighting Camels 53-0.

BREAKOUT FRESHMEN: Head Coach Derek DelPorto recruited a strong freshman class as two have won their weight classes during open meets this season.  Dean Vettese took home the first-place finish at the MSU Open, while Shayne Wireman earned a first-place finish at the EMU Open.
Vettese has placed in both his outings during the 2013-14 campaign, securing a first-place finish at the MSU Open and placing fifth in the EMU Open in the 165 lb. weight class. In his first collegiate outing, Vettese posted a 4-0 record en route to his first tournament championship using one pin, one major decision and two decisions to take the victory. After being pinned in his first bout of the EMU Open, Vettese battled his way through the consolation bracket with six straight victories to take home a fifth-place finish. The Rochester, Mich. native is the first Eagle to mark double-digit victories this season as he currently holds a 10-1 record.
Wireman has found success in all three of his outings this season. He went 4-1 to take a third at the MSU Open with one pin and four decisions. The Lansing, Mich. native got the nod at the 125 lb. weight class in the Eagles' first dual of the season, pinning Tiffin's Kyle Holiday in just 2:03 before going on to win four straight in the EMU Open. Wireman used three decisions and a forfeit to earn the first-place finish and improve his overall season record to 9-1.

ABRO KADABRO: Redshirt-sophomore Anthony Abro picked up his first career tournament victory as he won three straight bouts to take home the first-place finish at the EMU Open in the 184 lb. weight class. The Canton, Mich. native used a bye in the first round before taking victories from two-straight Big Ten opponents. Abro took down Northwestern's Mitch Sliga in a 5-3 decision before earning a 3-1 decision in the semifinals over Michigan State's Eric Ford. The 184 lb. weight class finals saw a matchup between two MAC opponents as Abro went up against Kent State's Trevor White. The redshirt-sophomore secured the 9-5 decision to notch a first-place finish for the Eagles. Abro also earned a starting spot in the Green and White lineup against Tiffin as he took a 5-1 decision over Caleb Matchett to give the Eagles a 45-0 lead over the Dragons.

AWN RANKINGS: Redshirt-seniors Phillip Joseph and Nick Whitenburg both received rankings in their respective weight classes after the second week of competion. Joseph is ranked No. 16 at the 184 lb. weight class after going 4-0 in the EMU Duals at Bowen Field House, including notching his first pin of the season. Whitenburg ranks No. 18 at the 197 lb. weight class in the AWN rankings as he went 2-1 at the EMU Duals, falling only to Drexel's No. 14 Brandon Palik.
