YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won in dramatic fashion as a pin from Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) in the final bout of the afternoon secured an 18-16 victory over No. 23 Stanford.

With the win the Eagles improve to 5-1 overall on the season, while Stanford falls to 5-1. EMU last beat a ranked opponent exactly one year ago when it defeated then-No. 24 North Dakota State, 18-17, Nov. 24, 2012.

The Green and White took an early 3-0 lead over the Cardinal as redshirt-senior Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) notched a 6-2 decision over Michael Sojka. Stanford tied the score when heavyweight Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) fell in an 8-1 decision to Josh Marchok.

EMU regained the lead over the Cardinal when Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) took a 9-3 decision to give the Eagles a three-point advantage, but Stanford responded right back as No. 3 Ryan Mango defeated Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) in a 12-5 decision at 133 lbs. to knot the score for the second time in the dual.

Redshirt-freshman Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) picked up his fifth dual win of the season when he secured a 12-6 decision over Matt Garelli, allowing Eastern to take a 9-6 lead halfway through the match.

The Green and White lead did not last long as Stanford won three-straight matches for its first lead of the afternoon. Maxwell Hvolbek earned a major decision at 149 lbs. before Peter Galli grabbed a narrow 4-3 decision at 157 lbs. over Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia). The Cardinal extended its lead to 16-9 when No. 20 Jim Wilson held Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) scoreless with a 4-0 decision.

Eastern started to battle its way back into the match when Mike Curby (Osseo, Mich.-Hillsdale) secured a 4-3 decision over Zach Nevills to bring the Eagles within four of Stanford heading into the final bout of the afternoon.

The Eagles went into the final match needing at least a major decision from Joseph in order to tie the dual. The redshirt-senior stepped up for the Green and White coming out of the gate aggressive and pinning Stanford's Thomas Kimbrell in just 0:59 to secure the 18-16 EMU victory over the No. 23-ranked Cardinal.

"Not the prettiest of wins for us, the match flip-flopped throughout before they won three-straight." said Head Coach Derek DelPorto, "Phillip came up huge for us, I told him before his match that he needed to major the kid by 11 points for us to win the dual or he could just pin him and he looked at me dead in my eye and said he would pin him. Phillip is not a huge pinner, he is a point scorer and we were confident he could win it. It was a great win that he needed and so did this team."

Eastern takes a week break during Thanksgiving before hitting the road for its first Mid-American Conference dual. The Eagles take on Old Dominion, Friday, Dec. 6 in Norfolk, Va. The dual is set to start at 7 p.m.
