EMU vs. Old Dominion Notes
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team kicks off its 2013-14 Mid-American Conference season when it heads to Norfolk, Va. to take on new conference member, Old Dominion University. The Eagles are set to meet the Monarchs at the Ted Constant Center, Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING OLD DOMINION: The Monarchs come into Friday's dual with a 2-3 overall record, riding a two-match losing streak. ODU suffered back-to-back home losses to top-25 teams as it fell to No. 16 Iowa State, Nov. 24 before falling to No. 8 Virginia Tech, Nov. 26. The Monarchs' two wins of the season came at the Hokie Duals when Old Dominion defeated North Carolina 25-6 before taking down No. 20 Wisconsin with a narrow one-point victory, 20-19.
Old Dominion has two wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in the WIN Rankings, as Chris Mecate is ranked 12th at 141 lbs. and Tristan Warner is ranked 19th at 157 lbs. Mecate currently holds an 8-3 record on the season including an 8-0 major decision over Wisconsin's Jess Thielke, while Warner posts a 7-2 record with his only losses coming against No. 20 Wisconsin and one loss at the NC State Open.
Both Buddy Scarborough and Austin Coburn post double-digit wins on the young season, as Scarborough holds a 10-6 record at 125 lbs. and Coburn has an 11-6 record at 184 lbs.
SERIES HISTORY: Friday's dual marks the first time the teams will meet on the mats. Old Dominion joins the Mid-American Conference this season after facing three MAC opponents in 2012-13. The Monarchs were tabbed to finish second in the conference, receiving 17 points, just two behind first-place Ohio.
EAGLES PICK UP THRILLING VICTORY AGAINST NO. 23 STANFORD: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won in dramatic fashion as a pin from Phillip Joseph in the final bout of the afternoon secured an 18-16 victory over No. 23 Stanford, Nov. 24. The Eagles fell behind as Stanford won three-straight bouts to take the 16-9 lead over EMU. Eastern started to battle its way back into the match when Mike Curby secured a 4-3 decision over Zach Nevills to bring the Eagles within four of Stanford heading into the final bout of the afternoon. The Eagles went into the final match needing at least a major decision from Joseph in order to tie the dual. The redshirt-senior stepped up for the Green and White coming out of the gate aggressively and pinning Stanford's Thomas Kimbrell in just 0:59 to secure the 18-16 EMU victory over the No. 23-ranked Cardinal.
EMU also saw wins from Nick Whitenburg, Jared Germaine and Nicholas Barber as each earned a decision over their respective opponents.
COACH DELPORTO NEARING MILESTONES: Head Coach Derek DelPorto is nearing two milestones in his ten year coaching career. DelPorto is just one win away from capturing his 100th win as a head coach and is just four wins away from breaking the all-time coaching record of 80 at Eastern Michigan.
The Erie, Pa. native posts a 99-90-2 all-time record after spending two years at Slippery Rock before coming to Eastern in 2006. DelPorto currently holds a 77-69-2 record at EMU, which is three wins shy of tying former head coach John Eisley. While at Eastern, Eisley posted an 80-74-4 record in his 12-year tenure. If DelPorto picks up just four more wins this season, he will take the all-time wins record in just eight seasons at the helm.
GERMAINE REMAINS PERFECT: Redshirt-senior Jared Germaine has come out strong in his final season as an Eagle. The Saginaw, Mich. native boasts a perfect 5-0 overall and dual record on the season as he has notched big wins in each of his bouts.
Germaine posted two decisions and a major decision at the EMU Duals before taking a 13-7 decision over Michigan State's Hermilo Esquivel and a 9-3 decision over Stanford's Tommy Pawelski.
JOSEPH SHINES AGAINST STANFORD: In a bout that would decide it all, Phillip Joseph gave everything he had as he quickly brought Thomas Kimbrell to the mat. Joseph continued to work Kimbrell as he came close to a pin on two different occasions. The redshirt-senior captain earned the victory for the Eagles in just a mere 0:59 seconds as he pinned Kimbrell to secure the 18-16 win for the Green and White.
The redshirt-senior has been strong for the Eagles all season after moving up a weight class since the 2012-13 campaign. Joseph boasts an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 record in dual matches as he placed third at the Green and White's first tournament of the season. The Lapeer, Mich. native has been a steady starter for the Eagles as he has appeared in two NCAA Championships throughout his career and posted a team-best 15 dual wins in the 2012-13 season.
OUTSCORING THE OPPOSITION: The Eagles are currently outscoring their opponents 160-68 on the young season as they have only allowed three teams to score in the double-digits through their first six duals. EMU dominated its first four opponents at the EMU Duals as it dropped only seven of its 40 bouts on the day, while averaging two pins per dual with eight total, including five in its first dual against Tiffin. The Green and White suffered its first loss of the season at Michigan State, but kept the Spartans to only one pin and six decisions, keeping the score under 30.
The Eagles came up with a close win over Stanford with a Phillip Joseph pin. EMU only allowed the Cardinal to score 16 points through the entire dual, allowing the Eagles to maintain a 90-point margin over all opposition.
